The dating to 1654-55 reflects an assumption that this is a very early work of Vermeer's, whose name is signed to it and to whom it is generally ascribed.  The Web Gallery of Art, source of this reproduction, calls it a Vermeer but adds a detailed caveat suggesting that it could be "an Italianate copy after a not yet identified original by a minor Italian master."
