Student Newspaper Practicum 1 (COMJ 3041) and Student Newspaper Practicum 2 (COMJ 3042) are journalism courses designed to have students work for The Bell Ringer, the campus newspaper at ASU. The practicum classes allow students to learn about the newspaper business through a continuing hands-on experience gathering and reporting news, features and sports. Class requirements are provided by the instructor at the beginning of each semester.

Both practicum classes meet together every Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Students are expected to be in attendance and should schedule work and other classes accordingly.

Apart from class requirements, students have obligations with The Bell Ringer. Those obligations include the following:

* One story minimum per issue as assigned/approved by a section editor

* Maintenance of a portfolio of stories published

* Participation in one campus/community promotional event coordinated with the editor in chief

* Attendance for an hour each at two production sessions to observe and assist, signed off by the editor in chief

Practicum 2 students are also expected to serve as mentors for students in the first practicum class and to serve the newspaper in a staff position.
