Department of Biology

 

Mission Statement:
The Department of Biology of Augusta State University seeks to stimulate an interest in scientific inquiry and the diversity of living organisms.  It seeks to equip students with skills necessary for future employment in various scientifically-related fields or for further study at graduate and/or professional schools.

 

 

Departmental Purposes and Goals:
1. The department will provide its students with a broad background in the biological sciences.

          1.1 Graduates will understand and be able to explain the classification system for living organisms, and                 basic concepts of cell biology, evolution, genetic inheritance, physiology, and ecological principles.

          1.2 The student should be able to apply the scientific method to solving problems, designing                 experiments, analyzing data, and evaluating conclusions.

          1.3 Students should become involved in research projects directed/supervised by the faculty.

2. The department will encourage its graduates to develop effective communications skills that will be      important to them in a scientific career or graduate program.

          2.1 The student should develop an understanding of technology and the ability to use technology in the                 biological sciences.

          2.2 The student should be able to understand and effectively communicate scientific information                 orally and in writing.

3. The department will encourage professional development, community service, and excellence in      teaching among its faculty.

          3.1 Faculty should do their best to teach and communicate effectively with students.

          3.2 Faculty should remain abreast of and informed about the advancements in their respective fields.

          3.3 Faculty should share their expertise with various components of the community.

4. The department chair will encourage and evaluate faculty in the areas of teaching, professional      development, and service.

          4.1 The chair will evaluate faculty in the area of teaching.

          4.2 The chair will evaluate faculty in the area of professional development.

          4.3 The chair will evaluate faculty in the area of community service.

5. The chair will see that the administrative activities of the department are effectively carried out.

          5.1 The chair will appropriate resoruces to ensure an effectively functioning department.

          5.2 The chair will appoint faculty to committees or specific jobs that assist him in the overall                 administration of the department.
