PROFESSIONAL DRESS FOR MEN AND WOMEN
First impressions during interviewed are made within the first 15-30 seconds during an interview. Make your first impression a positive professional impression by following these guidelines.
ATTIRE FOR WOMEN
- Wear a two piece business suit that is single-breasted with matching pants or skirt.
- Wear a white, off-white or neutral blouse.
- Wear neutral hosiery whether you are wearing a skirt or a pair of pants.
- Select conservative black, brown or navy closed-toed leather pumps or sling backs with heals no higher than one to two inches.
THE RIGHT FIT
- Ensure that the neckline of your blouse is no lower than two inches below your throat.
- Be sure that your suit fits well and is not too tight or too short.
- Skirts should fall no higher than the knee when sitting or standing.
- Wear appropriate under garments to avoid unnecessary exposure.
ACCESSORIES
- Limit your jewelry to one ring per hand, one watch, and one earring per ear lobe.
- Cover body art and evidence of tongue, facial, bolt piercings and extra piercings.
- Wear small stud earrings instead of large or dangling earrings.
GROOMING
- Use understated natural-looking make-up. Make sure lipstick is blotted and not too shiny.
- Avoid perfumes, colognes and heavy body wash scents; your interviewer may be allergic to them.
- Choose a well-groomed hairstyle that is appropriate for your interviewer’s office.
- Wear hair away from face, especially if long. Avoid distracting hair colors.
- Make sure nails are neatly trimmed. Avoid long nails and distracting nail colors
WHAT TO CARRY
- Carry a professional portfolio or leather bound pad to hold your identification, resume, references and, if appropriate, samples of your work.
- Leave your cell phone, handbag and backpack in the car or at home.
WHEN YOU ARRIVE
- Conduct a quick mirror check of teeth, face, hair, nails and shoes.
- Freshen breath with a quick dissolving mouth spray or mint.
- Remove mint, gum or candy before entering the interviewer’s office.
- Turn off cell phone or other communication devices (recommend leaving them in the car)

- Wear a two-piece business suit in gray or navy. Invest in a tailored suit, if possible.
- Wear long sleeved, starched, whit or light-blue shirt.
- Wear a conservative neck-tie. Avoid cartoon characters and them ties.
- Wear over-the-calf dark socks
- Wear business-style dark shoes that are well-shined. Avoid loafers or anything resembling a sports shoe.
- Match your shoe color and style with your belt.
ACCESSORIES
- Wear, at most, one ring per hand and a wristwatch.
- Cover body art and evidence of tongue, facial, and bolt piercings.
GROOMING
- Avoid heavy colognes or body wash scents.
- Choose a well-groomed hairstyle that is appropriate for the culture of the office where you are interviewing.
- Cut or trim facial hair carefully.
