Requirements for a Major in Chemistry – Professional Track

The professional track prepares students for graduate study in chemistry and provides for job placement as a chemist. (For more information on What You Can Do With a Chemistry Degree click here.) For additional information, the American Chemical Society (ACS) has a chemistry career website that you can check out.

In order to earn a major in chemistry under the professional track you must take at least 52 semester hours in chemistry.

The Chemistry (Professional Track) Curriculum:

The 52 hours in chemistry must include the introductory chemistry sequence CHEM 1211 and 1212 and CHEM 2810 (Quantitative Analysis). The remaining hours are listed below:

  • CHEM 3411 and 3412 (Organic Chemistry I and II)
  • CHEM 3721 and 3722 (Physical Chemistry I and II)
  • CHEM 3810 (Advanced Organic Chemistry)
  • CHEM 3820 (Laboratory Management and Safety)
  • CHEM 4210 (Advanced Inorganic Chemistry)
  • CHEM 4551 (Biochemistry I)
  • CHEM 4840 (Instrumental Analysis)

Two additional courses must be selected from the following options:

  • CHEM 4552 (Biochemistry II)
  • CHEM 4830 (Principles of Instrument Design)
  • CHEM 4950 (Selected Topics)

In addition, you must take PHYS 1111 and 1112 along with MATH 1113 (Pre-calculus), MATH 2011, 2012 (Calculus I, II), and MATH 3020 (Differential  Equations). We also require a computer programming course such as CSCI 1200. You must also meet all University Core Curriculum and graduation requirements as outlined in the university catalog.

Although there is not a required minor, many of our students choose to do extra work in biology, physics or other areas depending on their interests. Work on an undergraduate research project with one of our faculty is also encouraged. In any event, regular communication with your academic advisor is necessary to ensure satisfactory completion of your degree requirements and to guarantee that you are progressing along the lines dictated by your future interests in chemistry.
