Special Education - M.Ed. & MAT

The Special Education (SPED) Program at Augusta State University provides the option of one of two tracks in both the M.Ed. or MAT:  General Curriculum (Mild-Moderate) or Adapted Curriculum (Severe).  Students who hold a T-4 certification in one of the SPED categories may opt to either receive an M.Ed. in that category or add a second category to their certification.  Graduates who successfully pass GACE receive T-5 certification.

A student holding a degree in an area outside of education must submit an official transcript for evaluation to determine prerequisite courses.

Each program is comprised of 36 semester hours in 4 areas:

  • Professional Core (9 hours)
  • Special Education Core (15 hours)
  • Specialized Core (12 hours)
  • Electives (0-3 hours)
  • In addition MAT students must take SPED4002 as part of their certification

Frequently Asked Questions about the MAT Program

1. Who qualifies for the program?
Anyone who has a Bachelor's degree (4 year) in anything, and are not certified in any field in GA.

2. Are there any prerequisites?
No-just complete a Graduate Admission application.
* You will need to take SPED4002 at some point within your program to be certified, but it's not a prerequisite.

3. What are the required GACE II tests? When is the deadline to take?
Please do not take these tests prior to coursework! you will take them at the end of the coursework. You should take the GACE I now (basic skills) as it is required for certification in Georgia.

4. Can you get a provisional certificate and teach during program?
Yes, it's highly recommended. The Provisional hiring varies with county.
(At this time: Richmond County does, Columbia rarely does, South Carolina may depending on their needs, Burke County does.)

Please see advisor, Dr. Lori Anderson or Dr. Pollingue for additional info.
