Please indicate which event(s) you are entering (3 maximum).
Informative Speaking: Contestant presents a message which explains, describes, or demonstrates.

Persuasive Speaking: Contestant presents a message intended to initiate, reinforce, motivate, influence, or change beliefs of the audience.

Impromptu Speaking: Contestant receives no more than three minutes of preparation time on a topic not
previously known. Contestant chooses from three topics and selects one for speaking.

Poetry Interpretation: Contestant reads published poetry.

Prose Interpretation: Contestant reads a selection from a published novel or short story.

Dramatic Interpretation: Contestant reads from a published play and portrays every character in the selection.

Dramatic Duo: Contestants read a selection from a published play. Each contestant plays one character.

  • Professional dress and delivery is expected.
  • The official contest rules can be found in the Department of Communications and Professional Writing in Allgood Hall, E-122 and by clicking here.
  • Judging will be done by faculty members, alumni, and staff with appropriate expertise.
  • Students will learn speaking order and room assignments at check-in on the day of the event.
  • Participation is expected through final rounds.
