About the Department

Leza Witherington was born in Savannah, Georgia, adopted shortly thereafter by Mary and Joe Freeman, and went to live (for a short time) in St. Simons Island, GA. She spent her formative years tooling around the (now famous) Myrtle Beach Boulevard and goofing off as much as possible with her friends at the beach. Her “does everything” reputation started in high school where she was class president, student body vice-president, Beta Club president, captain of the volleyball team and cheerleading squad, editor of the yearbook and numerous other things that don’t really matter once you have graduated. Upon graduating high school she started college with a scholarship to the University of South Carolina-Coastal as a psychology major. During this time she also worked as a student assistant and as an art teacher/lifeguard at a summer camp for mentally disabled kids. As it often happens, school began to take a backseat to work and graduation became something she would do “one day.” After leaving Myrtle Beach, Leza ended up back home on St. Simons and at the Jekyll Island Club where she managed the Grand Dining Room for both breakfast and lunch. A few years later on her birthday her roommate introduced her to a friend from Augusta, Bob Witherington. Bob and Leza hit it off and ended up married about a year later. Leza was not happy about moving. She had been to Augusta before and was not that impressed. However, her father-in-law suggested she go back to school and finish that degree and even offered to fund the expedition. Well one never turns down a free education so back to school she went. While finishing her degree, Leza also went back to work on campus as she had fond memories of the feeling of family you have working for a small university. As luck would have it a permanent position was opened just as she graduated in the Department of Languages, Literature, & Communications, which as you all know has now split to form our own beloved Department of Communications & Professional Writing. She has enjoyed helping get the new department up and running but her favorite part of the job is working with students. Many good friendships have been formed and she thinks of ASU as a second family. She hopes to one day be a student again and enroll in the MPA Program here at ASU.
