Communication Studies focuses mostly upon non-mediated, personal communication with self, one-on-one communication with another, small group interaction, public speaking, organizational communication, intercultural communication, political communication, and the full rhetorical tradition. We refine spoken, written, and nonverbal ways to discover information, relate to one another, help people, persuade others, and enjoy yourself.

What can I do with a major in Communication Studies?
Acting is a skill that can be taught and sharpened with proper training. We can prepare you for a career in theatre- both on the stage and behind it. You can learn to act, direct, and write for the stage. And you can learn to design and build sets and to design light and sound. Most importantly, you can have the opportunity to develop your skills in front of live audiences on our stages. If you have desire, determination and a strong work ethic, you can do all this in the Theatre track.

If you like telling stories and providing information to the public, then a career in journalism may be for you. The Journalism track prepares students for careers in print journalism, stressing writing, reporting, and editing, and requiring at least one year's hands-on experience with ASU's student newspaper.

The Professional Writing track prepares students for careers in creative writing, entertainment, business, writing for the web, and academia. Creative writing students have several opportunities each year to publish or produce their work, and technical writing students work on inter-disciplinary projects.

The person who chooses the TV and Cinema track must have passion for the field. This track is for the student who has technical skills they would like to polish to become a filmmaker, who enjoys the artistry and social reflection of motion pictures, who has or would like to have the writing/producing/performing skills necessary for all aspects of media, and who wants to be a professional in the media revolution that is just in its beginning stages.
