ENGL 1101/13 textbooks
Common handbook
As of Fall Semester 2012, The Little, Brown Compact Handbook, 8th Edition with Exercises (author Jane Aaron) is the common handbook across all sections of ENGL 1101/13 and 1102/14. Students in all sections are required to obtain a copy of this book.
Your instructor can tell you whether you also need to purchase access to the MyCompLab software that comes packaged with new copies of the book. The software isn't required across all sections, but some instructors do require it. Your instructor might also allow you to buy a used book and purchase MyCompLab access separately through Pearson, but don't assume this; check with the bookstore and your instructor first.
If you're allowed to buy a used copy and you do so online, please make sure that you choose the correct edition. Older editions of Little, Brown, or editions without exercises, won't be of any use to you in 1101.
There are advantages to having a common handbook. It's easier for students, teachers and the bookstore to keep track of. And it'll be helpful to students as they move on to ENGL 1102/14 (where the handbook is also required) and other courses at GRU. The processes, rules and tips in the handbook aren't limited to English courses – they're applicable in other majors and writing environments as well. In short, don't sell back your copy too quickly! That being said, another advantage of having a common handbook is that many of them will be sold back, which will make more used copies available.

Custom reader
This new collection, entitled Augusta State's English 1101 Reader, is also available beginning in Fall Semester 2011. It contains 20 essays, many of which have been used in ENGL 1101 course work and assigned for Exit Essays in the past. This book isn't required for all sections, so check to see if your section requires it (at last count, half of Fall Semester 2012 sections do). The ISBN is 9781256134121.
In sections where the reader is not a required book, it's likely that a different reader is required. Check the space assigned to your course section in the bookstore and your instructor's syllabus for more information.
Choice Voice
Choice Voice is a collection of student writing produced in ENGL 1101 and 1102 and is required in many sections of these courses. This collection is helpful to students who want to learn more about the expectations of college-level writing at GRU. This collection is printed on campus and is available at the bookstore only.
