Introduction to College Composition

ENGL 1101/13 (College Composition I) is an introduction to college-level writing that focuses on narration, exposition, analysis, argumentation and research skills. Students in this course write at least two major multiple-draft essays and complete an end-of-semester timed Exit Essay. Additional course assignments include exams, reading responses and exercises in the documentation of sources in academic essays. Students in some sections are asked to to collaborative group work and/or presentations. Many students write web-based assignments. For more information on the course, click here.

ENGL 1102/14 (College Composition II) focuses on library research and the writing of college-level research papers. It includes at least one major essay (and often several minor ones) in which print and electronic database sources are used and cited. The course is literature based; students read and analyze fiction, poetry and drama and use these primary texts (as well as secondary sources) as the basis for their research papers in the course.
