Wind Ensemble Director, Applied Trumpet

 

Dr. Richard House has been the Wind Ensemble Director and an Assistant Professor of Music since August 2001. Besides directing the Wind Ensemble, his teaching duties include applied lessons in trumpet, conducting, and music education. He is also the Faculty Advisor to the ASU Pep Band. Prior to his appointment at Augusta State University he was an Assistant Professor and Director of Instrumental Music for four years at Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Virginia.


Dr. House continues to be an active trumpet performer as a substitute/extra with the Charleston (SC) and Augusta (GA) Symphonies, Augusta Opera Company, Augusta Jazz Project Big Band, Fresh Music Market, and numerous church services and weddings. His primary trumpet teachers include David Hickman, James Searl, and Emerson Head.


His degrees include a Doctor of Musical Arts (1998) and Masters in Trumpet Performance (1995) both from Arizona State University, and a Bachelor in Music Education from East Carolina University (1986). While at Arizona State, he was an Assistant Conductor of the ASU Orchestras. His conducting teacher and mentor was Dr. Timothy Russell. His dissertation was a quantitative research study titled Effects of Expressive and Nonexpressive Conducting Gestures on the Performance and Attitudes of Advanced Instrumentalists. The study found that expressive conducting: (a) contributed to expressive performance (p<.01), and (b) was preferred by advanced instrumentalists (p<.0005).


Prior to his graduate studies, he directed High School and Middle School bands for seven years in Raleigh, NC (1988-1993) and Chesterfield, SC (1986-1988).
Dr. House is active in the following professional organizations: College Band Directors National Association, International Trumpet Guild, Music Educators National Conference, Georgia Music Educators Association, and the College Music Society.
