OLYMPIAD INVITATIONAL

AND PRACTICE TOURNAMENTS

The olympiad competition should be viewed just as an athletic competition. Both require practice. One way to practice is through practice invitational tourneys. Please consider organizing a practice tournament.

Usually 1-2 schools will host a practice tournament. Some key aspects of invitationals:

  1. Most, if not all, events are held. Some sites will opt to do only some of the events.
  2. Often times, more than one team from a school may participate in a given event.
  3. Schools participating are usually responsible for running one or more events.
  4. Invitationals are great ways to practice and to increase student and parent interest and also.
  5. GASO would like to see more practice tournaments in November, December, or January. Help is available from the director in organization, communication etc.
  6. Schools hosting a practice/invitational tournament will receive $150 from GASO to use in their Science Olympiad program.
  7. A listing of invitational tournaments will appear on this page and What’s New page as information is received.

HIGH SCHOOL INVITATIONALS 2010-2011

1. 30 October 2010: Westminster invitational;Atlanta. Contact Ken Gibson (keng@westminster.net)

 2. 13 November 2010 Alpharetta High School's Science Olympiad  beginning @ 9AM.

(coles2@fultonschools.org )

Theregistration fee will be $75 per team for the tournament.  Pizza will also be available for an additional fee, still TBD.  You will be notified of the cost of that prior to the competition.  The following
events will be hosted: Anatomy, Disease Detectives, Ecology, Microbe
Mission, Ornithology, Astronomy, Dynamic Planet, Fossils, Remote
Sensing, Optics, Chemistry Lab, Forensics, Protein Modeling,
Experimental Design, Technical Problem Solving, & Write It, Do it.  We
will also offer the written portion of Wind Power and also possibly
Sounds of Music.  The engineering events to be offered will be Towers,
Mousetrap Vehicle, and either Helicopters .  We will
continue our format from last year of teams paying for seats in the
testing rooms.  In other words, you can mix and match competitors from
two.  For example, if you have two teams and send Joe and Frank as a
team and Susie and Amanda as a team to Chemistry Lab in the first hour,
you can then send Joe and Amanda as a team to Ornithology and Susie and
Frank as a team to Ornithology or anything else that they are interested
in.  This simplifies the competition because most of us might not be too
familiar with our new team members.  If this is confusing, you can
contact me, and I will explain further.  E-mail me if you are interested
in competing at coles2@fultonschools.org .

3.15 Jan 2011 Brookwood High School Invitational tournament, Snellville (joe_cox@gwinnett.k12.ga.us)

In the interest of exposing SO to as many kids as possible, we would like to increase our tournament from 28 to 48 teams.  I really believe something close to 48 is possible.

Obviously, with making it this large, grading things in a timely manner becomes a huge concern.  On the attached TENTATIVE schedule you will see the harder to grade events will be in the first or second time slot or offered across all time slots (limited to 12 teams per time slot .)  The idea being you could grade the results from the first time slot in the second, etc.  Events that I perceive to be scantron / fill in the blank were placed in the 3rd and 4th time slots.  The size of our rooms makes for another problem.  It will be necessary to run some events in two rooms simultaneously.  (I will provide a volunteer to proctor one of the rooms.)
We plan to serve pizza at 1:00 (purchased by the teams) after the last event - It's a filler of both stomachs and time.  I'm going to try to have the American Chemical Society put on a demo show from 1:40 - 2:20.  The award ceremony is to start at 2:30 (You know what they say about the best laid plans)

The date: January 15th
Tentative Registration $60.00
Half off registration of one team per school, if running an event or if the school has been participating in SO for 2 years or less.

2.Fulton Science Academy 11 Dec, 2010

FULTON SCIENCE ACADEMY SCIENCE OLYMPIAD INVITATIONAL

We plan to host a (up to) 12 team invitational tournament on December 11 th . You can find the tentative schedule below.

- For now, we ask the guests schools to bring only one team. (FSA will participate with 3 teams).

- If you wish to bring more than one team please let us know. In case we do not fill all 12 spots we will allow you to bring a second team.

- Registration fee is $50. You may write checks payable to Fulton Science Academy and bring the checks with you to the tournament.

- We plan to run all the events except “Storm the Castle”.

- We expect the guest teams to setup and run one of the following events, if possible : Anatomy, Compute This, Disease Detectives, Dynamic Planet, Ecology, Fossils, Meteorology, Ornithology, Shock Value, or Solar System. (We will try to prepare alternative tests for all those events to ensure we can run them.)

- Award ceremony will be at 3:30 and it may be held in our cafeteria or a nearby venue. We will let the participating teams know once the decision is finalized.

- We will award ribbons to first 6 places in every event. We will also have trophies for the top 6 teams. FSA may receive only 1 team trophy.

-We can -and most likely will- help with the lunch arrangements. Participating teams will receive detailed info about lunch later.

- Please contact me at zdemir@fultonscience.org for any questions, concerns or suggestions that you may have.
