Georgia Science Olympiad: Grades K - 5

The"suggested" events for 2009 may be found here. These events will be run at the state invtiational (see below for link), but schools should feel free to use whatever events are most appropriate for their school

There are manuals available with many different activities both for intra-school and inter-school competition.Often schools or schools sytems decide what to do.Contact the state director for information, training for teachers, manuals, etc.

Activities for K-3 :" Science Fun Day"

  1. Usually within a single school; sometimes within a single class or grade level . Very flexible in terms of activities.
  2. Simple, hands-on science activities with students working in small groups.
  3. Olympiad "Fun Day" manual available for $15.00, including postage

Activities for grades 3-5

  1. Typically developed within a school system. Events similar to those in grades 6-12.
  2. Many activites lend themselves to whole class lessons.
  3. Often held after school or 3-4 hours on Saturday.
  4. Uusally, the statewide committee selects/recommends 18-21 events in fall. Events rerpresent a balance of science topics.Events will be posted on this site after 15 September, 2006.
  5. County science coordinator often in charge; usually teams of about 18 students.
  6. Uusally different teachers or high school students responsible for the events.
  7. Local business often provide ribbons, medals etc.
  8. Emphasis on celebrating different aspect of science rather than competition.
  9. Manual of 84 events available from state director, $23.00 including postage.
  10. Many counties in Georgia have program with many or all elementary schools.

3-5 Invitational State tournament

Usually in May of academic year at Kennesaw State University.
