AUGUSTA STATE UNIVERSITY
October 9, 1998
10:00 a.m. Payne Hall Conference Room
Old Business: Regarding the issues of memberships and composition of the graduate council raised at the meeting of September 21, the AVPAA suggested that Dr. Joyce Jones, Dean of Students, be invited to sit on the council in order to increase the "student voice".
Further, on the issue of membership, the practice of sending "proxies" on behalf of the Deans, upon occasion, was discussed.
New Business: Following from the Old Business discussion, the history of the old graduate council was related. Specifically, were elective positions reserved on the old graduate council? This was suggested as another topic will be for a search of the records and minutes.
A spirited narrative of the "graduate faculty status" debate at Augusta College followed. Richard Bramblett raised the issue of Dean representatives, Student Affairs representatives, and faculty invitees coming to Council meetings, especially when the group focuses on matters which require a special familiarity with a subject.
Another issue brought forward was whether or not ALL graduate curricular matters should pass through the council. Tangentially, the question of "level of review" arose. Two subheadings were established:
1) the composition of the council in relation to its authority.
2) the duties of the graduate council; does responsibility stems from the inherent authority of the positions held by the respective members of the council?
It was noted that whatever the graduate council does, it should work collaboratively with the Academic Policies Council and the Faculty Policies Committee, among other groups. There was a query as to whether joint meeting would be appropriate.
Members of the current council agreed to ponder general questions to be answered at some time in the future.
A) Should we compare our graduate program practices with those of sister institutions in the USG?
B) Will we have to reinstate the process for faculty to achieve graduate faculty status?
C) Did a graduate policy manual ever exist?
The AVPAA pledged to dig up sources which might help the Council in sorting out the above matters, and to check at least one sister institution.
The Council adjourned at 11:05 a.m.
