Graduate Council Subcommittee
September 12, 2000
Augusta State University
The subcommittee convened in Dean House's conference room at 9:05 am.
Fissel reviewed the charge the subcommittee had received from the Graduate Council, namely that the subcommittee should review the document proposing a mission, procedures, and policies for adoption by the Graduate Council.
It was moved that the Graduate Council mission document address the education of post-baccalaureate students, rather than strictly candidates for graduate degrees. The motion received no second.
The matter of designating a "graduate faculty" was raised for discussion. The imperative of collegiate control over allocation of faculty to graduate programs, especially in regard to informed scrutinization of credentials and ability was underscored by several subcommittee members. Therefore, based upon a knowledge of past practices, the designation of faculty for teaching graduate courses will remain, naturally, within the prerogative of the colleges, and will not be infringed upon by the Graduate Council.
The creation of a "section 4" under "processes" was suggested and accomplished.
Revisions to "section 2" of the "processes" section were proposed and implemented.
A general discussion ensued concerning the use of portfolios in graduate programs.
A discussion about the role of the Graduate Council in the promotion of institutional effectiveness, i.e. formulation of annual reports, rounded out the meeting.
Fissel volunteered to make the above-mentioned revisions to the document, and to then circulate that corrected copy to the subcommittee members, in preparation for its submission before the entire Graduate Council.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:56 am.
