Grant Funded Activities Taking Place on Campus
Savannah River Scholars Program - Funded by the National Science Foundation
Project Directors: Dr. Andy Hauger (Chemistry and Physics) and Dr. Sam Robinson (Mathematics and
Computer Science)
The first twelve Scholarships in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) have been awarded to students
majoring in chemistry, mathematics, and physics for this fall 2011. This new program, funded by the National
Science Foundation, seeks to integrate research with education as well as to increase the number, diversity and quality
of graduates in the sciences.
The SRSP targets academically capable students who lack the financial resources to attend college full-time and
who want to work on faculty-led collaborative research projects. The program is expected to improve the educational
experiences of the participating students by offering additional support services including science and mathematics
tutoring, formation of a student cohort with separate on-campus housing, individualized faculty advising and mentoring
and peer mentoring. The SRSP students will also attend monthly seminars on science and mathematics research as
well as career and graduate school information sessions with alumni and local industry leaders. For more information
on this program, please go to the SRSP website at: http://www.aug.edu/srsp/

NSF - Water Sustainability and Climate (WSC)
Agency: National Science Foundation
Program: Water Sustainability and Climate (WSC)
Next Deadline: October 19
One of the most urgent challenges facing the world today is ensuring an adequate supply and quality of water in light of
both burgeoning human needs and climate variability and change. Despite water's importance to life on Earth, there
are major gaps in our basic understanding of water availability, quality and dynamics, and the impact of both a changing
and variable climate, and human activity, on the water system. The goal of the Water Sustainability and Climate
(WSC) solicitation is to understand and predict the interactions between the water system and climate change, land use
(including agriculture, managed forest and rangeland systems), the built environment, and ecosystem function and
services through place-based research and integrative models. Studies of the water system using models and/or observations
at specific sites singly or in combination that allow for spatial and temporal extrapolation to other regions, as
well as integration across the different processes in that system are encouraged, especially to the extent that they advance
the development of theoretical frameworks and predictive understanding.
FUNDING: $31 million for 12-26 awards.
