Evidence suggests that the Arsenal Guardhouse was constructed shortly
after the Civil War in 1866. It is not known whether the bell
tower which stood immediately to its west side was part of the original
construction or not. Certainly by the end of the 19th century
the bell tower was in place.
The only early photograph of the bell tower (left)
only the legs of the tower. The top of the tower and bell is obscured
by a tree. The cannons and shot lined up on the left side of the
walk were stored here for many years after the Civil War.
Another early 20th century photograph (below)
of the Guardhouse shows the entry to the Arsenal as it appeared to those
approaching from Walton Way. Unfortunately, the bell tower is
just out of sight to the right of the picture.

it appears today. Plans are currently underway, and funding sought,
to renovate the Guardhouse as a museum.
