This information pertains to anyone who has a computer and peripherals that will be moved into Allgood Hall this summer.

I. Preparing for the move

Before you disconnect and bag up your computer per Kathy Hamrick's instructions, you should backup all your data (just in case) Remember, if your computer dies and you have no backup, you have no data!!! As always if you need help contact the HelpDesk (x1482). We'd much rather help you make backups, than offer you comfort when you have nothing.

How to backup your data: There are many ways to backup your data depending on the volume of information that you need saved and the type of drives you have available on your computer.

  1. Copy data to a CDROM. If you have a writable CDROM, this would be your preferred method for backups.
  2. Copy data to a zip drive. This would be the preferred method for those who have a zip and DO NOT have a writable CDROM.
  3. Copy data to a floppy disk. If you have a small amount of data, this method could be used.
  4. None of the above. If none of these methods will work well for you, please contact the HelpDesk (x1482) for an alternative method.

Reminder: Do NOT pack your backups for the movers to move - this should be something that you "hand carry" with you.

How to disconnect your computer

  1. Make sure all disks are removed from your floppy drive, CDROM, and Zip drive.
  2. Shutdown your computer and be sure that the monitor and system unit are powered off
  3. Poweroff all printers and other devices you may have connected.
  4. Disconnect your power cables, mouse and keyboard cables, network cable, monitor cable, speaker cable, and any other cables that may be connected to your system unit.
  5. Disconnect power cables from your Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), surge suppressor, or from the wall outlet.
  6. Place all cables and equipment in the appropriate containers provided for the move.

II. After you have moved in to your new office

  1. Now setup and reconnect your computer. Feel free to setup and reconnect your computer yourself. Connect all printers, scanner, and other devices to your computer before you power anything on.
  2. The wall jack for your network connection will be clearly marked with a red dot. You should feel comfortable connecting this up also.
  3. If you need assistance, please contact the HelpDesk (x1482) and we will assign someone to assist you.

Latest Virus/Internet Worm - 10/31/2003 W32/Mimail.c@MM is the latest virus/internet worm - read below for details and update your computer. Also, don't forget to update your home computer.

Latest Security Information - 10/27/2003 There is yet another vulnerability that you should be aware of for both your office and home computers which is in the Windows Messenger Service - This is NOT the same as INSTANT MESSENGER, or any of the other messenger services such as Yahoo, MSN, or AOL. The new vulnerability is associated with Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows NT computers.

FOR YOUR OFFICE COMPUTER: If you are up-to-date on all your Windows Patches then you should be relatively safe from this vulnerability. But to err on the side of caution, we will be disabling the Windows Messenger Service on campus computers. This process will be managed "automagically" by the Network Administrator, so you don't need to do anything to your office computer.

If you are running an application that uses the Windows Messenger Service, please contact our Help Desk to let them know which computer needs this service and we will remove that computer name from our "automagical" list after we confirm with you that the computer is up-to-date on all Windows patches and critical updates.

FOR YOUR HOME COMPUTER: We recommend that: 1. You have installed the latest Windows patches and 2. Your virus protection is up to date.
