In January of this year, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG) ratified an Information and Information Systems Appropriate Use Policy (AUP). With the AUP, the Guidelines for Interpretation and Administration of the USG Appropriate Use Policy were published to assist in the implementation of the new policy. As a unit of the USG, this policy applies to Augusta State.
A USG news release quotes Stanton Gatewood, USG chief information security officer, as saying, "The University System of Georgia values individuals’ security and privacy and actively seeks to preserve the security and privacy rights of those who share information with us. We are dedicated to preventing unauthorized access to information, maintaining the accuracy of information, and ensuring the appropriate use of information. We strive to put in place appropriate physical, electronic, and managerial safeguards to secure the information we collect in all formats-on paper, electronically, and verbally."
The contents of the USG AUP policy and standards are broad in nature. Its focus is on the ethical use of the resources, such as respecting others, using only what is permitted, and abiding by all laws and regulations. The guidelines go into more depth on specific violations of the USG AUP. Violation examples are given for each of the ethical standards covered in the AUP itself.
Awareness is the key factor for an appropriate use policy. ASU will be using
the USG AUP as a resource to accompany our existing Computer
and Network Usage Policy. ASU will be evaluating the guidelines document
to ensure that all violation examples do not run counter to our current policies,
standards, or guidelines. If there are questions or comments on the policies,
