Last Meeting:  Minutes of  October 11, 2005

Special Agenda Items:  Discussion of partnering with a Mexican library, or one in a city with which the city of Augusta already has a sister relationship.  This would be in accordance with the ACRL’s Sister Libraries initiative.  Additional information will be gathered, and discussion will continue at our next meeting.

Area Reports:

Reference: (Fay Verburg):  There has been a problem reported with community patrons taking the daily password sheet from the reference desk notebook and signing themselves in when there is no security guard and the librarian on duty is unavailable.  In the future, the librarian on duty should give the daily password sheet to the circulation assistant on duty when he/she knows they will be away from the desk.  If there is a security guard on duty at that time, then the password sheet should be given to the guard.  The librarian should also logoff the computer at the Reference Desk when leaving the area.

Library Instruction: (Camilla Baker):  Twenty-eight classes will have been taught in October by the end of the month.  This is three fewer than last October, but this September, with fifty-four classes, was 100% busier than last September, with twenty-seven classes.  Camilla B. had the opportunity to work with the Lab-in-a-Box, ITS’s portable classroom technology solution, during some class sessions in mid-October.  The laptops provided were reasonably reliable, and the students enjoyed working with them.  A suggestion has been made to consider purchasing laptops for Room 304 when the computers in that room are due for upgrade.

Special Collections: (John O'Shea):  Special Collections is still receiving positive feedback from the Sayre family and from the Augusta community about the Georgia Archives Week event on October 4 honoring J. Louis Sayre.  A plan has been developed to have some hand-drawn, historical Augusta maps in Special Collections microfilmed.

Technical Services: (Diane Black):  Technical Services has received the annual book order from the Department of Languages, Literature and Communication.  The main invoice from Ebsco Subscription Services has not been received as yet.

Automation: (Jeff Heck):  There have been intermittent problems with campus e-mail services.  ITS is working on the problems.  Jeff is working on an E Z Proxy upgrade which requires a domain name change; he is working with ITS to resolve this.  Campus spam filters have been upgraded.

Outreach Librarian: (Mellie Kerins):  Reminders were given about the following upcoming events:

Monday, October 31 – Staff participation in Halloween activities and ConnectFest
Wednesday, November 2 – Rape Crisis fundraiser. Volunteers are still needed for some activities and preparations.
Tuesday, November 15 – Meet the Author, featuring Joseph Green, College of Business Administration

Electronic Serials: (Martha Bryant):  The trial for Datamonitor is still ongoing; anyone interested may still use the login provided last week.  The campus-wide 30-day trial access to the Chronicle of Higher Education should be ready soon.

Government Documents: (Joe Schneider):  Joe is still deselecting depository items.  The collection shift is ongoing.

Media Services: (Rose Axton):  No report.

Circulation/Associate Director: (Camilla Reid ):  Renee Thompson is the new Library Assistant III in Circulation.  A reminder was given regarding It’s Spooky to be Hungry! donations.  The annual Thanksgiving luncheon will be held this year on Tuesday, November 22, at noon.

Director: (Bill Nelson):  Tenure recommendations are due to Dr. Nelson by October 27, 2005.  Sprinkler system installation begins on Wednesday, October 26.  As different areas on each floor will be closed to the public while the work is being done, library employees may be required to retrieve books for patrons during the course of the installation.  Librarians should also check the outside stairwell door when securing the building, as installers will be working ten-hour days.

Committee Reports:  The Library Committee will meet on Thursday, November 3, in the Reese Room.  The Student Technology Fee Committee is also meeting on November 3.  The following funding requests have been submitted from the Library:  1) color laser printer for Circulation; 2) six addition laptops for check-out at Circulation; 3) continuance of some database subscriptions.
