Area Reports: |
Reference: (Fay Verburg): Fay has not spent all of her reference allocation for FY2006. She requested recommendations for electronic products and books that could be purchased with the remaining funds. |
Library Instruction: (Camilla Baker): Ninety-seven student classes have been taught during the Fall 2005 semester. This is a significant increase over the number of classes taught in the Fall of 2003 and 2004, especially in the number of Freshman English classes. |
Special Collections: (John O'Shea): The Sumner map collection was microfilmed November 9th at the South Carolina State Archives. John attended the Annual Meeting of the Society of Georgia Archivists in Augusta November 2-4. |
Technical Services: (Diane Black): Technical Services is continuing to receive library orders for FY2006. The deadline for submitting both book and new serial orders from ASU departments is December 2. Diane contacted Karalyn Kavanaugh at EBSCO to check on the status of the annual renewal invoice. |
Automation: (Jeff Heck): Voyager 5 upgrade is planned for the period between December 17, 2005 and January 6, 2006. Jeff worked with Bob Trotter at UGA to resolve the problems created in the New Books list when the Cataloging Unit changed the process for creating holdings records. |
Outreach Librarian: (Mellie Kerins): Mellie is sending thanks to everyone who participated in The Rape Crisis fundraiser. The event raised $629.60 in cash (from the sale of food, drinks and raffle tickets) and $680.50 worth of toiletries and clothes. Associate Professor and Cree-Walker Chair Joseph Greene will discuss his latest book From Cotton Fields to Board Rooms at the next Meet the Author event on Tuesday, November 15. Plans for the library’s Christmas luncheon on December 15 are forthcoming. |
Electronic Serials: (Martha Bryant): The response to the online Chronicle of Higher Education has been very positive. The library is looking at funding sources for purchasing a campus wide online subscription. Martha reminded everyone to periodically review the Free Trials website and send her responses to the products. The web address is http://www.aug.edu/%7Elejwww/. Martha brought up the issue of hiring a new nighttime reference librarian to cover some night hours at the Reference Desk. This would give librarians more time to focus on the responsibilities of their assigned library unit. |
Government Documents: (Joe Schneider): Government Documents is continuing to consolidate documents from the stacks into the documents collection. Joe is reviewing the new GPO model for selecting Government Documents. The new selection policy may impact the library’s Collection Development Policy and selection rate. Deborah and Joe will distribute the last round of surveys to undergraduates in social work, psychology and political science on November 17. This is for the research project surveying document usage. Deborah Tritt attended the Annual Charleston Conference “Issues in Book and Serial Acquisition” November 2-5. |
Media Services: (Rose Axton): No report. |
Circulation/Associate Director: (Camilla Reid): ERes has seen a significant increase in use during the last several months. Use almost doubled between September and October. Now that the carpet installation is almost complete, Circulation is continuing to straighten up the 3rd floor book ranges. The Student Government Association requested the library building be open longer hours. A study of weekend hours during FY2005 indicated that library use during early and late opening times is limited. Camilla Reid asked the SGA to table the request until the completion of the new Student Activities building. After the Student Activities building is opened, a new survey will be conducted to see if patron traffic patterns change. The library is reviewing some of its policies in an effort to be responsive to student needs. Camilla requested that a review of the Reese Library Mission statement be added as a Special Agenda item to our next library meeting in light of the mandate to do so in the University’s new “Meeting Students Where They Stand: Annual Retention and Graduation Rates Improvement Plan.” Camilla is facilitating the next SGA’s Hot Topics on Hot Plates series scheduled for November 15. The topic will be the War in Iraq. |
Director: (Bill Nelson): ITS will purchase the spam filters software after trial testing proved its effectiveness. The library sprinkler system installation on the 3rd floor will be complete by Sunday, November 13. Testing on the 3rd floor system will begin the first of the week and then 2nd floor installation will begin. Ginny is working with the Physical Plant to resolve problems with the carpet installation. There have been some supply issues and difficulty with removing the old carpeting. The Student Technology Fees (STF) Committee is working to determine what proposals will be funded with this year’s technology fees. The LibQUAL +™ Survey will be conducted during the Spring 2006 semester. |
Committee Reports: During the Library Committee meeting November 3, one major area of concern was the funding for new serials and media purchases. Camilla and Diane agreed that communications to departments would be rewritten to better explain that departmental allocations could be used for purchasing media, books and new serials. |
Miscellaneous: The CSRA Library Association will meet at 1 PM Saturday, November 19 at the Woodrow Wilson House for a short meeting followed by a tour of the house. |
