Special Agenda Item: Library Student Retention Committee--present: Jamie Bassett, Beth O’Dell, Patricia Perry and Miriam Zecharias. Erica Pastecki came for part of the meeting. In Camilla Reid’s absence at the beginning of the meeting, Camilla Baker asked the members of the committee to suggest ways to reach new students and what information they would need to have about the library that can be given in a brief amount of time. This is in preparation for the Summer Orientations for Freshman as part of the Student Retention and Success Initiative.

Area Reports: |
|
Reference: (Fay Verburg): Fay is considering changing the community user policy for reference computer use to a two consecutive hour maximum per day. Both pros and cons were discussed. It would reduce the time necessary to log on and off and avoid the issue of keeping track of one hour blocks of time. No vote was taken. Fay created a line graph of number of reference questions during the
period of time 1997 to the present. The number of question was vastly
reduced during that time, undoubtedly due to student use of online resources
without help from the reference staff. It would be interesting to compare this
with GALILEO statistics and the gate count. |
|
Library Instruction: (Camilla Baker): No report. |
|
Special Collections: (John O'Shea): No report. |
|
Technical Services: (Diane Black): They are working on spending the rest of the book budget money from the departments. The Passport system of tracking serials is gone and now this is done by using GOLD through an OCLC connection. More information is available but it is somewhat complicated and time consuming. Some inconsistencies have been noted in the GIL full record status fields
in that in some of them have duplicate information. |
|
Automation: (Jeff Heck): ITS informed Jeff that there were some errors in Netscape 4.0 e-mail users due to a recent update. It is necessary to keep up with updates on all e-mail readers. He encouraged everyone to try Outlook and is available to help if it is needed. A new print management software product, Pawprints, has been installed on the computers in the InfoSquare, reference room and room 304. The software is designed to limit unnecessary printing and encourage students to keep track of their prints. A new color laser printer has been installed at the circulation desk which
is much faster than the old one. |
|
Outreach Librarian: (Mellie Kerins): Martha Corkrin is working on
the next issue of Reese’s Pieces. Mellie will write the article on the
new staff development process. Employees will be encouraged to attend one of
several workshops chosen by the Inreach Committee and related to their jobs
rather than the “one size fits all” workshops of the past two
years. |
|
Electronic Serials: (Martha Bryant): Martha announced a free trial of the Alexander St. Press, Women and Social Movements, which is available on the free trials link on the library webpage. On Thursday, March 16, she will participate in a “webinar” on
Verde 2.0, a new electronic resource management system. |
|
Government Documents: (Joe Schneider): Since January 2,962 pieces have been moved from the stacks to the documents collection and the corresponding GIL records changed. Joe and Deborah Tritt are in the final stages of their research project. |
|
Media Services: (Rose Axton): No report. |
|
Circulation/Associate Director: (Camilla Reid ): Camilla read a delightful letter from Patt Boerner in which she expressed her regret at having to resign from working as a part time reference librarian. Camilla and Dar Scarff will start interviewing this Thursday for the two vacant positions in circulation. There have been over 700 responses from the LibQUAL+ survey to date. |
