Area Reports: |
Reference: (Fay Verburg): The two hour time limit for community users on the reference room computers seems to be working well so far. New part-time librarians Allyson Davis and Deborah Tritt have both come in to learn our closing procedures and will be starting weekend reference work soon. |
Library Instruction: (Camilla Baker): So far for the summer session we have had seven classes. Camilla is working with the public library to coordinate a place on campus for public librarians to meet and learn how to use the new system they are getting to replace PINES. |
Special Collections: (John O'Shea): Our new student assistant, Philip Jordan, is doing well and making many good contributions to various projects in Special Collections. Camilla Reid was contacted by the President’s office about transferring some materials related to commencement to Special Collections. |
Technical Services: (Diane Black): Ordering is complete for FY06. The Technical services department is planning on hiring some student workers for the summer. |
Automation: (Jeff Heck): Jeff reminded everyone that he and Diane attended the GUGM (Gil User’s Group Meeting) conference. The Office of Information and Instructional Technology (OIIT) has helped to set up FirstSearch links in GALILEO. An ILLiad link will appear next to journal articles; it can be clicked on and will automatically fill out an ILLiad request for the item upon login. Currently, this only works for the few FirstSearch databases. |
Outreach: (Mellie Kerins): Bill Wells has the video of his recent appearance on a Discovery Channel special about the Coast Guard. Mellie is making plans for a public, on-campus showing of this video. Carol Waggoner-Angleton, John O’Shea, Martha Corkrin, and Mellie met last week to discuss Georgia’s Archives Week. October 10 has been discussed as the date. Staff development will be done differently this year. Everyone will have the opportunity to choose a local, nearby, or online workshop of interest to them as long as it is approved by their department head and Dr. Nelson. Mellie has spoken with Georgia Cunningham about the opening of the new Student Center. There will be a big grand opening celebration, and the library would like to be involved. |
Electronic Resources: (Martha Bryant): Dr. Chad Stephens has requested a trial of Crossfire Beilstein, an Elsevier product. Martha has been having a little difficulty getting information for this product, but a trial should be in place soon. The Oxford African American Studies Center online trial will end May 25. |
Government Documents: (Joe Schneider): No report. |
Media Services: (Rose Axton): No report. |
Circulation/Associate Director: (Camilla Reid): Dr. Nelson, Rose Axton, and Camilla Reid are meeting to fill the Business Manager position. Michelle Deloach is working that position temporarily until a permanent replacement is hired. Andy Bruner and Carol Hutto are two new students working in Administration. The publicity for the September through December Let’s Talk About It! Jewish Literature book discussion series is progressing well. A Partnership for a Nation of Learners teleconference will be hosted by Reese Library on June 19 from 12:30 – 3:00 in Media Services. We are letting other libraries and museums in the area know about this. Camilla pointed out that there are several library positions that are open in the area. The ASU Vice Presidents have sent out a memo about performance reviews. The memo stresses that these must be done in a timely manner. New furniture has been ordered for the 3rd floor and 2nd floor study rooms, and the dejunking of the library will soon be complete! |
