Area Reports: |
Reference: (Fay Verburg): Fay reported that Rick took a laptop computer over to Allgood and University Halls to offer research assistance to students. He did not have very many requests for help, but he will try again at a different time of year. There was an incident with a patron last week. In the future we are to call public safety immediately if this patron has any problems. Fay will let the part-time librarians know about this. We also discussed having the security guard sit in reference when the reference staff member has to be away from the area. |
Library Instruction: (Camilla Baker): We taught 20 classes (361 students) in the month of October. Our tentative total of classes so far for November is seven. |
Special Collections: (John O'Shea): John is attending the Society of Georgia Archivists Meeting in Atlanta November 1-3. “Faith” Gaol Xong Her was hired as a student assistant and began work in Special Collections this week. |
Technical Services: (Diane Black): The technical services department has been very busy with serials and the large EBSCO invoice. The invoice is full of errors that Diane and Marsha are having to check. |
Automation: (Jeff Heck): No report. |
Outreach: (Mellie Kerins): Mellie thanked everyone who helped and brought food and donations to the Rape Crisis fund raiser on Wednesday. We raised $804 in cash, which is a 28% increase from last year. The Inreach Committee will take over the planning and organizing of the library Thanksgiving dinner. We agreed to continue to have the luncheon funded by the librarians. We discussed Georgia Archives Week and the possibility of collaborating with the Augusta Museum of History and the Augusta Richmond County Historical Society. |
Electronic Resources: (Martha Bryant): Martha received a packet of information from Microsoft about a new program they are beta testing called Windows Live Academic Search. This is a free service from Microsoft similar to Google Scholar. She will send the link to everyone to take a look at it. Debbie Van Tuyll has requested that we set up a trial for a Thomson database called 19th Century U.S. Newspapers. |
Government Documents: (Joe Schneider): Miriam has hurt her back and will be out for a few days. Many government documents have now been brought down to the 2nd floor. Joe thinks that within the next two or three months almost all of the government documents will be on the 2nd floor. Joe and Deborah Tritt will be at the Depository Librarian’s Meeting in Valdosta, GA on November 28-29 making a presentation. |
Media Services: (Shirley Logan): Media Services has been very busy. A lot of faculty and students are taking advantage of the services they offer, especially the DVD recording and poster printing. |
Circulation/Associate Director: (Camilla Reid ): Camilla gave a presentation at Rock Eagle, GA last week, and it went very well. Dr. Sullivan asked her to give a presentation to the President’s cabinet based on her experiences at the Institute for Academic Library Leadership at Vanderbilt in July. Questions were raised about the problem of plagiarism and what we can do to combat it. Camilla suggested that we could put Camilla Baker’s links to information about plagiarism in a more prominent place on our website. There also appears to be a need for a citation help site similar to RefWorks. We will look for simple, affordable programs for this. Camilla gave everyone a copy of what library employees wrote on the white board about our Unit Plan Strategy about Human Resources. We will discuss this at the faculty/staff meeting on November 21st when Walt Alexanderson, Director of Human Resources at Augusta State University, and Dalton Brannen from the Hull College of Business at ASU will provide a staff development session for us. |
Director: (Bill Nelson): We plan to get a new Information Directory sign to put outside of the Jaguar Student Activities Center so people will be able to see our hours and other information when the JSAC is closed. The library is going to coordinate the checkout of laptop computers with Media Services. Information Technology Services will stop circulating laptops and transfer their student laptops to Media Services. There is proposed funding for Augusta State to offer an undergraduate and graduate program in Middle Eastern Studies. The library needs to examine what we currently have available in our collection for a program like this, what we would need to purchase, and how much it will cost to add resources for this program. |
Committee Reports: The Library Committee met recently. They discussed the library’s hours, our foreign language holdings, and the library survey. They agreed to continue to interpret the results of the LIBQUAL survey we did last spring in an effort to avoid a lot of duplication by putting out their own survey this year. |
Miscellaneous: Our next Meet the Author program will be Thursday November 9 at 2:30. Ted Atkinson will be discussing his book Faulkner and the Great Depression. Dr. Nelson will be out next week. |
