Last Meeting:  Minutes of November 30, 2006 were approved as corrected.

Special Agenda Items: None

Area Reports:

Reference: (Fay Verburg):  Fay reminded everyone to send their reference schedule requests for January.

Library Instruction: (Camilla Baker):  Spring Instruction class reservations are coming in; most are at the ASUO 1000 level.

Special Collections: (John O'Shea): No report.

Technical Services: (Diane Black):  Books and media are arriving and being processed.

Automation: (Jeff Heck):  The first of the three GIL-only kiosks is almost ready.  There will be one on each floor.  A new ILLIAD upgrade is coming.

Outreach: (Mellie Kerins):  The Library and Media Services Holiday Luncheon is scheduled for Tuesday, December 19 at noon.  Mellie read a suggestion from a student requesting a study room where students could meet in a group without bothering others and also have computer access.  Nick Mims said there are two presentation rooms in Media Services which have computer access.  The library and Media Services have laptops for checkout, if available, which can be used in study rooms.

Electronic Resources: (Martha Bryant):  Two trials are now available:  Datamonitor and Faulkner’s Advisory for IT Studies.  Ebrary is offering a sheet music database; Music Department faculty is interested.  We will arrange for a trial in January.

Government Documents: (Joe Schneider):  Docs student assistant Isaias is leaving at the end of the semester because of a full class load next semester.

Media Services: (Nick Mims):  Media Services is ordering three Crestron systems for classroom buildings.

Circulation/Associate Director: (Camilla Reid ):  The end of semester Unit Plan Report was sent to Dr. Sullivan December 12.  The deadline for reporting the ACRL statistics has been moved to February 1, 2007.  The library will request the purchase of paper for student printers with any middle of the year funding that is available.  This is the last year in which student technology fee money can be used to purchase paper and ink cartridges for printers.  We are working on getting a JAGcard reader for the library.  A plan is in place for improving the lighting in the browsing book area; funding is needed.  The library received a grant from the Faculty Research and Professional Development Fund for the Summer Institute for Academic Library Leadership course at Vanderbilt University which Camilla attended last summer, during this fiscal year.

Director: (Bill Nelson):  Problems with the front doors appear to have been fixed.  Any further incidents should be reported.  A request has been made for resources to have the west door open during library hours.  This involves hiring an additional security guard.  Should the library extend its hours, the JSAC would have to also change theirs, since we share an entrance, unless the side door could be used.  Jasper Cooke is looking into ways to incorporate into the library the security camera system in the JSAC. Dr. Nelson will be spearheading a RACL study to improve statistics gathering for the University System.  He asked the librarians for any input to identify what is needed and possible sources from which to obtain the information.

Committee Reports: None.

Miscellaneous:  Mellie gave out copies of “Tidbits from The Power of Personal Persuasion: Advancing the Academic Library Agenda from the Front Lines, ACRL Toolkit, 2006,” which contains information about today’s students, both younger and older, and ways in which the 21st century academic library must change in order to meet the needs of these users.

Camilla Baker and Camilla Reid brought up the idea of a library blog to reach students in a manner already commonly used by many. It was agreed that we should set one up for a trial run.  Publicity and content were discussed.  It was suggested there should be a module imbedded in instructional courseware in order to get the most publicity.  Jeff volunteered to set it up.  All of us agreed to give input as needed.
