Last Meeting: Minutes of November 14, 2007 were approved with editorial changes. |
|
Special Agenda Items: There was an extended
discussion of library personnel issues.
|
|
Area Reports:
|
|
Reference: (Fay Verburg):
No Report.
|
|
Library Instruction: (Camilla Baker):
Six library instruction classes for 156 ASU students were taught in November.
The final total count for the Fall semester was 100 classes to more than
2,000 students. Seven classes were taught in non-library locations because
the class sizes were too large to be accommodated in Room 304.
|
|
Special Collections: (John O'Shea):
During Carol Waggoner-Angleton’s absence, the student assistants have
rearranged their schedules to help cover Special Collections hours. Work on
the index to the loose photographs continues. The photographs are currently
being scanned as jpeg images for inclusion in the index.
|
|
Technical Services: (Diane Black):
Diane attended the online SOLINET class, A Librarian’s Guide to
eBooks, on November 26. The session was informative and answered many concerns and questions related to
ordering and monitoring use of electronic resources.
|
|
Automation: (Jeff Heck):
No Report.
|
|
Outreach Librarian: (Mellie Kerins):
Author and photographer, Robert Arnett, will
discuss his internationally acclaimed book, India Unveiled, at Reese
Library on January 12, 2008 at 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon was selected to encourage
community participation in this event.
|
|
Electronic Serials: (Martha Bryant):
Martha performed an overlap analysis through Serials Solutions to see how
much overlap there is between Art Full text and what we currently have access
to. There was only one journal out of 173 that we do not currently get
through another database.
|
|
Government Documents: (Yadira Payne):
At Dr. Nelson’s request, Yadira reviewed and certified the Spanish
translation of ACRL’s Standards for Libraries in Higher Education.
Government documents that have been on the 2004 and 2005 Needs and Offers
holding shelf have been removed and holdings have been deleted from the
library catalog and OCLC. A workflow and schematic for Government Documents Department
is currently in progress. It will be ready for the student assistant to begin
the shifting process in December.
|
|
Media Services: (Rose Axton):
No Report.
|
|
Circulation/Associate Director: (Camilla Reid):
Painting in the library should be completed soon and the lab on the 3rd
floor will be open again for students’ use. The new GALILEO interface
will become effective on December 17. A Pipeline message and email will be
sent to both students and faculty to notify them of the upcoming changes to GALILEO.
The new library web site has received favorable reviews from the Library
Committee. Diane Black’s article “Clinton-Anderson Hospital,
Inc.: a Legacy of Linwood C. Hayne,” was published in the Fall 2007
issue of Augusta-Richmond County History. The library will be
subscribing to Harbor House Books’ new serial publication, Pillars
of Augusta Life.
|
|
Director: (Bill Nelson):
The Student Technology Fee (STF) Committee has determined what proposals will
be funded with this year’s technology fees. Dr. Nelson is in the
process of notifying campus departments whose requests have been funded for
FY2008. Library projects that will be funded include several GALILEO
databases including JSTOR, Project Muse, Humanities International Complete, Historical
Abstracts, BioOne, ARTstor (1/2), Book Review Digest, and Safari Tech Books
Online. The Media Center will receive new laptops that were requested.
|
|
Committee Reports:
The library’s annual Christmas Party will be held on December 18 in
the 2nd floor lobby area. Jeff and Bill are working to fit the new
library web site into the template designed by Public Relations. Jeff is investigating the possibility of integrating the Sakai open sourceware into the library automation system. The software includes many of
the features common to course management systems and is being used by
several other universities in the USG system.
