Special Agenda Items:Continued review of Reese Library Serials List

Area Reports:
Media Service: (Ralph Herndon): Media Services has purchased a new 24“ printer to replace an aged one.

For Teacher Education, Media Services produced an interactive DVD.

Many of the Media Services staff members attended an AVI/SP conference in Atlanta Tuesday, May 4th with the hopes of learning more about video conferencing.

Media Services will be working the upcoming events: Military Science Commissioning and President’s Club Reception.

Curriculum Center: (Cindy Britt): The Curriculum Center received Federal Work Study funds for summer so Cindy was able to use money usually reserved for paying student assistants to order books and supplies.

There are two orientation classes scheduled for summer.

Reference: (Fay Verburg): Fay distributed a list of questions that were asked at the reference desk during the Finals Frenzy extended library hours. Ten questions were asked: three were directional questions and seven were reference questions. There were no reference questions asked during the extended hours on the last day of Finals Frenzy.

Library Instruction: (Camilla Baker): There have been two requests for ASU1000 summer classes.

Congratulations to Camilla Baker for becoming a tenured faculty member.

Special Collections: (John O‘Shea): Following a meeting with the Library Director, the Special Collections’ User Policy was revised. These changes should bring Special Collections into compliance with standard use and security procedures in other Archives. The new policy will be posted on the Library website.

From mid-May to mid-June, one student assistant will be in Ireland as part of the Study Abroad Program and Carol Waggoner-Angleton will be attending the Georgia Archives Institute. This may result in some temporary changes in Special Collections’ operating hours during those times.

Congratulations to John O’Shea for successfully completing post-tenure review.

Acquisitions/Cataloging: (Various): Philip Mixon’s last day was Tuesday, May 4th. A search will begin to find his replacement after the new Acquisitions and Cataloging Librarian is on board.

Kate Culver continues to work on spine labels, the donation processing and weeding.

Francine McCoy retired April 30th, after 24 years of service. That position will remain vacant until the new Acquisitions/Cataloging Librarian is hired.

For future Acquisitions correspondence with vendors, a new email address has been generated. It is acquisitions@aug.edu.

Automation: (Jeff Heck): ITS will be working to fix a networking switch at 5:00 p.m. today.

A new group printer has been installed for ASU students on the 2nd floor.

Computers have been requested using yearend funds as part of the Reference Room/Infosquare redesign. Four stations will remain for community users and 12 will be available on the new pods.

Outreach: (Mellie Kerins): A collection of award-winning quilts will be displayed in the library gallery sometime in May.

Electronic Resources/Serials: (LouAnn Blocker): The Augusta Chronicle Archive is moving to NewsBank. There is no longer a need for ‘seats,’ since the subscription will be for a site license, with ASU users accessing with the GALILEO password off-campus and community users having on-campus access. While the exact price cannot be determined at this time, it will be an increase from the 2008 price of $480. We have a choice of paying each year or a one-time, perpetual access fee. Annual cost for 1792-1993 is $3217.00. One-time purchase is $26,807.00 with an $804.00 annual access fee. If we wanted the one-time, they would let us spread it out over three years. If we choose to purchase on July 1, they will set up the access soon so we can test it out. If we wanted to buy another collection at the same time for perpetual access, like the African American newspapers, we would get a discount on both.

Reviewing department lists for end of year wrap-up and next year’s orders. HCOB has agreed to cancel the print edition of Business Periodicals Index since that’s covered in Wilson Business Full-text, and Kinesiology is considering cancelling Physical Education Index since the Library provides that online, too.

Government Documents: (Yadira Payne): Government Documents currently has an interactive Memorial Day display on the first floor near the entrance. It will be up until the 31st and is intended to honor those who have fallen in the name of duty and those currently serving our country. The department also has two displays up on the 2nd floor: Asian-American Pacific Islander Heritage Month; Caribbean-American Heritage Month. Corresponding pathfinders/resource guides are available for each display. They will remain up until August.

Circulation: (Dar Scarff): Dar has supplied Camilla Reid with a spreadsheet reflecting the attendance count hourly during the five days of finals frenzy. The total patron count during Finals Frenzy! hours were 618.

Collections for ASU was successful in getting one of the circulating laptops back from a student, which was to be returned back in February.

Making numerous phone calls to patrons with lost material (checked out during the Spring and Fall Semesters) has resulted in a large number of items being returned and replacement payments made.

Invoices for unreturned books borrowed by other USG patrons through GIL Express were sent to the home USG libraries. The library is now beginning to receive checks for the replacement charges from these libraries.

Dar hopes to have TouchNet (online credit card payment) ready by next week. The library currently is not listed (visible) on the ASU eMall webpage. She also will be making changes on the circulation webpages. (These will reflect cash, check, JagCard and major credit cards via the ASU eMall webpage.)

Dar is currently working with ILLiad 8, a new upgrade for our interlibrary loan borrowing and lending. The user will see no changes as most of it is “behind the scenes”.

Joshua Gonzalez’s last day will be Friday, May 14th. A search will begin after that date to find his replacement.

Business Services:(Ginny Loveless): The glass wall that separated the InfoSquare and Reference is in the process of being removed. Within the coming months, the Library will be getting two new computer pods and chairs for the Reference area.

Andy Bruner, library Administrative Specialist, began full-time status on May 3rd . Ginny Loveless and Andy Bruner have completed a three-week Disaster Preparedness class through Lyrasis and are now in the process of updating the disaster plans for Reese Library.

Congratulations to Camilla Reid who will be an Associate Professor at Augusta State University (as of July 1, 2010).

Director: (Camilla Reid): Camilla asked that all library faculty members read the recommendations given to Dr. Sam Sullivan by the Library Committee.

For the next Library Faculty meeting, Camilla would like to discuss the Associate Director’s position as the Special Agenda item.

Committee Reports: (Heck): IT Committee: ITS plans to replace the student email system with Live@edu, Microsoft's cloud-based email solution. The Luminus portal, Pipeline, also will be replaced, probably with a portal product from Campus EAI, a consortial effort. The goal is to replace both at the same time, though the portal product is delayed because of problems with the contract.

(Heck): OIIT Discovery Committee: Frontrunners for the next generation of GALILEO currently are Serial Solutions’ Summon product and EBSCO's EBSCO Discovery Service. Ex Libris’ product, Primo, remains under consideration. The advantage to the new approach is that all indexes are merged into one, speeding up search time for all the library products. (Heck): IT Security Committee: ITS is finalizing the implementation of changes suggested by an IT audit several months ago. (Payne): Acquisitions/Cataloging Librarian Search Committee has phone-interviewed candidates and will make a decision as to whom to bring to campus for interviews during the week of the 17th. (Kerins): Inreach will sponsor one, maybe two, students from the Literacy Center to attend ASU’s Kids University this summer. Dr. Paulette Harris will make a recommendation to Carol.

Miscellaneous: (Heck): Jeff has been named Associate Editor for the Georgia Library Quarterly, the official publication of the Georgia Library Association.

(Loveless):Camilla Baker and Jeff Heck were both elected to the Faculty Policies Committee.

(Payne): The CSRA Library Association will be hosting its first conference on Friday, May 14th in the JSAC.

(Payne): Yadira won first place (in the 18 and over age group) for her painting titled “Viejo San Juan” at the 2010 DFMWR Fort Gordon Spring Fest Art Exhibition and Competition.

Next Meeting: May 19th, 10:00 a.m.
