Area Reports:
Media Service: (Ralph Herndon): Media Services submitted Student Technology Fee proposals in the hopes of getting many of the campus classrooms on campus upgraded.
A website update for Media Services is in progress.
Augusta State University President William Bloodworth is teaching a speech class this semester. The students enrolled in the class will be delivering their speeches at a national competition. Media Services has been helping the students prepare by providing a venue and videotaping the speeches.
Curriculum Center: (Cindy Britt): No report.
Reference: (Fay Verburg): Fay will be taking part in one of the book discussion groups sponsored by the ASU Center for Teaching and Learning.
Library Instruction: (Camilla Baker): Library instruction for this semester is slowing down, and most of the students are attending for advanced library instruction.
Special Collections: (John O'Shea): The Special Collections LibGuide, “What’s New in Special Collections”, is now available.
John and Carol Waggoner-Angleton attended the Society of Georgia Archivists/SCAA joint archival conference last week. It was a very successful and beneficial conference. Special thanks to Outreach Assistant, Matthew Whittington, for ensuring John and Carol had Reese Library bookmarks and brochures, and ASU participants’ packets. Thanks also go to Judy McAlhany, Director of the Augusta-Richmond County Historical Society for providing journal issues for the packets.
Acquisitions/Cataloging: (Kyle McCarrell): A decision was made on hiring a new Acquisitions Specialist. The committee and the Technical Services Department decided to select Amanda Strever. She began Monday, October 25 and is quickly learning her new responsibilities to help the library save money and acquire materials.
Kyle, along with others, attended the GA COMO meeting in Athens on October 13-15, 2010. He also attended the Southeastern Music Library Association (SEMLA) Conference in Columbia, SC on October 16, 2010.
Kyle and LouAnn Blocker met with the Hull College of Business faculty. They seemed to be very interested in exploring the acquisition of e-books.
Kyle has completed meeting with all departments regarding GOBI.
Technical Services participated in the library’s Harvest Feast fund-raiser benefitting ASU Kids U.
Kate Culver has added 67 new books and 17 new DVDs in October. She weeded 60 other books.
Cataloger’s Desktop/Classification Web trials ended October 22. There was some positive feedback regarding the value of this service for the Technical Services and Special Collections department. There was a consensus to acquire it and try it for a year.
Outreach:(Mellie Kerins): Reese’s Pieces, Reese Library’s newsletter, was electronically distributed to library personnel last week. After some final editing, it will be distributed to the campus.
On October 30, Carol Waggoner-Angleton and Mellie Kerins went to a FOGL (Friends of Georgia Libraries) workshop in Washington, GA demonstrating how to host effective “Meet the Author” events.
November 2, there will be a “Meet the Author” at 2:30pm in the lobby of the Library’s second floor. Wendy Turner will be discussing her book, Madness in Medieval Law and Custom.
Electronic Resources/Serials: (LouAnn Blocker): Thursday November 11 at 10:00am in the library conference room, the library has a meeting scheduled with the ProQuest rep, Sandy Schulmann, about their new interface.
November 2 at 2:30pm in the Butler Room of the JSAC Shannon Nix and LouAnn will present “This is your Brain on too much Information.”
Tuesday, November 16 and Tuesday, November 23 at 7:30pm in the Performing Arts Theatre, Camilla Baker and LouAnn will both participate in ASU choral concerts.
Kyle McCarrell and LouAnn will attend the Charleston Conference Wednesday November 3-Saturday November 6.
Currently, the library is offering free trials of American History in Video and World History in Video from Alexander Street Press. LouAnn will look at overlap in coverage with Films on Demand.
LouAnn will be serving on next year’s Black History Month Committee, along with long-time member Lillian Wan.
LouAnn is investigating JSTOR’s Current Scholarship Program to see if we have any titles that could be represented there. Participation would mean that not just archives, but current contents of some journals could be discoverable in JSTOR.
Before the end of December, Reese Library, along with the Chemistry Department, must decide whether to continue with Elsevier’s ‘enhanced’ Beilstein product, which will offer the Gmelin database, a chemical patents database and new journal content, or to purchase Symyx’s new Discovery Gate product. LouAnn is waiting on pricing and a trial from Discovery Gate to help us, along with Chemistry department, to make a decision.
Government Documents: (Yadira Payne): On Wednesday, November 3 Yadira and JannMarie Chandler will be attending the US Patent and Trademark conference and Workshop at Georgia Tech.
The library’s room 304 computer lab will be used by SEMAU (Southeast Model Africa Union) as they make last minute preparations for the delegation presentations during the 3-day event. Yadira and the Government Information staff will personnel the room while it is open.
At COMO, Yadira co-presented the following presentations: “Celebrating the extra space!: a practical guide to weeding” and “The state of federal government documents in Georgia”. As the current Chair for the GLA Government Information Interest Group, Yadira was pleased to see that both presentations were very well attended with a growing number of public library representatives. She attributes this trend to the current state of affairs with shrinking/disappearing budgets and the free accessibility of government information via databases and purls. Also at COMO, she was elected Vice-Chair/Chair Elect of the GLA Interest Group Council.
The Georgia State Plan for Federal Depository Libraries is currently under revision. These are the policies and regulations Reese Library must adhere to statewide and regionally. Reese library is in compliance with the current first draft revision.
Government Information has completed its home page/front portal LibGuide which will soon be accessible with a redirect from the library’s home page. Student worker, Tristan Nall, and Yadira have completed the Borinqueneers LibGuide and display which directly correlate with the ASU Film Series presentation of the Borinqueneers film to be held Monday the November 8 at 7:00pm. The Violence Awareness Week: Cyberbullying and the Love Your Body Day LibGuides have been very successful and well received by the corresponding departments. Government Information is currently working on a Native American Heritage Month and Code Talkers LibGuide.
Business Services: (Ginny Loveless): Ginny attended the Library Assessment Conference in Baltimore, Maryland October 24-27. She also presented a poster detailing how Reese Library used LibQUAL + survey results and feedback as fodder to get funds to improve the physical space within Reese Library.
Meagan Morgan, a part-time administrative specialist, attended the Hull College of Business’ Career Academy that was held over a period of six weeks.
Associate Director/Automation/Circulation: (Jeff Heck): Jeff served as a presenter on a panel as part of the Society of Georgia Archivists conference held this past week in Augusta. His topic was how to prepare for and publish articles in the Georgia Library Quarterly.
November 8 is the scheduled changeover date for faculty / staff email to Live@edu and the new campus portal. Faculty using MS Outlook should see no change in their use of their email on campus.
Director: (Camilla Reid): Continuing with the renovation and efficiency planning project for the library, the Scope of Work has been sent to the chosen architect and interior designer.
November 1, Camilla and Jeff Heck attended a legal training for managers workshop provided by ASU Human Resources.
The University has set aside funding for the development of a design for a new HVAC system plan for Reese Library.
The Automation Librarian Search Committee has completed its work and the candidate recommended by the committee has been offered the position. As soon as the contract is signed and returned, an announcement will be made.
The Vice-President called for funding proposals for expending FY11 lapsed funds. The Library and Media Services sent several requests for his consideration.
Committee Reports:
(Heck): The USG Discovery Tools Committee continues to evaluate products to use as the next generation of GALILEO. The availability of content will be a major factor.
(Reid): The Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Search Committee has begun to meet and will be considering applications within the next few days.
The Library Committee met on October 27. The committee is recommending that a representative from the library be included in the space planning and programming process for the new building on Wrightsboro Road.
STF Committee has met twice and will soon be making a final prioritized list for funding the campus FY11 STF requests.
Miscellaneous: (Payne): There is still time to volunteer to work on a committee for the next CSRA Library Association Annual Conference. A meeting with volunteers is set for Saturday, December 4 with a time and place yet to be determined. The next events for the CSRA-LA offer two options: 1) attend the Borinqueneers film and lecture Monday, November 8 at 7:00pm for free; or 2) attend the Soul City Sirens final game of the season Sunday, November 14 at 6:30pm at the Redwing Rollerway, cost $10.00. An association email with details and links will be sent later this afternoon.
