Special Agenda Items:In anticipation of possible budget reductions next fiscal year, the Regents Academic Committee on Libraries (RACL) has asked USG schools to prioritize their resources in GALILEO. The resources were discussed amongst the librarians and a finalized list for Reese Library will be forwarded.

Reese Library’s ‘Access Policy/Students under College Age’ was updated. Other access policies will be revised and posted to the library website.

Area Reports:
Media Service: (Ralph Herndon): Items funded by Student Technology have been installed, including new projectors in University Hall and equipment in Galloway Hall. SkyScouts, devices that use advanced GPS technology to identify stars, planets, and constellations are now available for check-out.

Curriculum Center: (Cindy Britt): Cindy was able to speak to all three groups of Education students (Early Childhood, Middle Grades, and High School) at the orientations for new Education majors on January 4 and to showcase the resources available to them through the Curriculum Center. Each student received a packet of information which included the recently-revised Curriculum Center brochure.

Two classes have been scheduled to come to the Curriculum Center for orientations.

New material is coming in at a steady pace, with 35 new bibliographic records created in December, along with 81 additional items.

Reference: (Fay Verburg): No report.

Library Instruction: (Camilla Baker): Library Instruction classes are being scheduled for the spring semester.

Special Collections: (John O’Shea): Carol Waggoner-Angleton, Special Collections Assistant, conducted a class on December 21 for the Augusta Genealogical Society’s Historical Documents Committee on processing special collections materials.

Reese Library’s archives display from Georgia Archives Week was loaned to the East Central Georgia Regional Library Headquarters to display.

The digitization project of ASU publications through Lyrasis is continuing.

Jessica Leming, an archival project specialist from Lyrasis, made a consulting visit December 14 for Reese Library’s Pilgrim Life project. A finalized report from Ms. Leming is forthcoming. Judy McAlhany, Augusta-Richmond County Historical Society Director, will be working part-time in Special Collections while Carol Waggoner-Angleton is on medical leave.

Acquisitions/Cataloging: (Kyle McCarrell): The department is caught up with faculty orders and has spent about 60% of the allocated book funds. A large number of print orders prior to the February 1 deadline is anticipated, but also a sizeable amount of money has been reserved for use on e-books or other resources.

Due to the rapid rate of ordering, there is a backlog of cataloging material. Due to her experience in cataloging government documents, JannMarie Chandler, Government Information Assistant, will work an additional ten hours per week for Acquisitions and Cataloging.

Kate Culver and Cindy Britt added approximately 220 items to the GIL online catalog during the month of December.

Kyle has set-up a free trial with Business Expert Press to see if the business department is interested in purchasing BED’s 110 title e-book collection. The trial runs through March 31, 2011, but a decision will need to be reached earlier than this deadline if Reese Library is to add these titles.

LouAnn Blocker and Kyle met with the Biology Department regarding items of interest to them. GOBIAlerts, a program that creates lists of new titles in the biological fields, was set-up for selected faculty members, although it is still primitive in its uses.

Outreach:(Mellie Kerins): No report.

Electronic Resources/Serials: (LouAnn Blocker): Two new databases are available in GALILEO: Science Direct’s College Edition and Life and Health Sciences journals (funded through Student Technology) and Reaxys (replacement for Crossfire Beilstein).

Reese Library has five journals that were eligible for the JSTOR Current Scholarship program, so the current full-text of these journals will now appear in JSTOR along with the back issues:
  Film Quarterly
  Representations
  Social Problems
  Symbolic Interaction
  William and Mary Quarterly

There are training opportunities for the new ProQuest interface, which LouAnn sent out to library faculty and others who work with databases. If anyone needs the link re-sent, let her know.

Reese Library has a trial of the Chicago Manual of Style until March. The trial of Access World News has been extended to allow further beta testing. Within the next couple of weeks, there will be trials of Children’s Literature Database, CQ Researcher, The Human Body—How it Works, Oxford Bibliographies Online, and Oxford Reference Online.

Carol Waggoner-Angleton and LouAnn received news that they were not successful in their application for the Louisa May Alcott: the Woman behind Little Women grant.

Government Information: (Yadira Payne): For the spring semester, the Gov Info Department will be open from 8:30am-5:30pm Monday-Thursday and 8:30am-5:00pm Friday.

The deadline to submit responses to the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) survey is February 28. This survey is intended to aid the Government Printing Office’s (GPO) efforts in addressing the value of FDLP membership, as well as depository access, services, and collections. The survey link is .http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/HSLCRRB

The GPO has partnered with Google to offer Federal Government titles in an e-book format. This partnership further extends the GPO’s e-printing of documents thus lowering printing costs. Access is available through the Google ebookstore.

On December 15, Miriam Zecharias, JannMarie Chandler, and Yadira attended the Annual Georgia Depository Libraries Meeting at Mercer University. This was a lively and informative meeting as participants discussed the ASERL proposal (the new American FactFinder webpage), the release schedule of Census information, LibGuides for government information, and the draft of the new State Plan. Also at the Annual meeting, Georgia Library Association (GLA) Government Information Interest Group members voted on and passed the Constitution and Bylaws revisions. Also approved by vote was the addition of a new position of Permanent Historian developed by Yadira. This person will act as the historian, GLA Records Committee liaison, and mentor to new Depository Coordinators.

Business Services: (Ginny Loveless): No report.

Associate Director/Automation/Circulation: (Jeff Heck): Over the holiday break, ITS upgraded the library’s wireless platform to allow a more secure wireless connection. When completely turned on, the upgrade will provide better encryption and faster data transfer.

Voyager software, used in the library for cataloging, circulation and other activities, was upgraded during the holiday break.

Director: (Camilla Reid): In the past couple of weeks both President Bloodworth and Dean Parham have had the opportunity to visit the Pilgrim Room on the third floor to see where the collection now resides.

The Advocacy Group for Evening and Non-Traditional Students will be meeting in the library on January 13. They are interested in developing a poster contest and other means for helping advertise the Family Room. They will also be given a tour of the Family Room suite.

Camilla Reid is a member of the campus steering committee planning for a campus-wide compensation study sometime in 2011 for all 12-month employees. In preparation for the study all job descriptions and evaluations, including staff development plans need to be up-to-date.

There will be an important ASU Strategic Planning Forum today, January 6, at 2:30 p.m. The newly drafted strategic plan will be voted on at the January 25 ASU Faculty Meeting.

Committee Reports: (Heck): ITS Committee: Jeff asked that if anyone has comment or suggestions for ITS relating to the recent change to MyASU (portal and email systems), please forward them to him for relay to ITS at the next IT Committee meeting.

(Reid): Library Committee: There is a Library Committee meeting on January 12. Please let Camilla Reid know of any issues that the committee might be interested in. The agenda for the meeting includes reports by Jeff Heck and Ginny Loveless on the 2006 and 2010 LibQUAL results.

Miscellaneous: (Payne): Membership fees for the CSRA Library Association are due.

(Heck): The Georgia Library Quarterly (the official publication of the Georgia Library Association) is changing to open-source, peer-reviewed, and all-digital publication. Reviewers are sought for the double-blind review process.
