Last Meeting: Minutes of the September 8, 2011 meeting were approved as distributed.

Special Agenda Items:(Reid): After taking a look at and discussing the three Library Value Statements endorsed by the Inreach Committee from among the second list put to a library-wide vote, Camilla Baker, Fay Verburg, and LouAnn Blocker volunteered to bring back a recommendation at a future meeting

Area Reports:
Media Service: (Ralph Herndon): The Media Center is providing A/V equipment and personnel for the Board of Regents meetings on October 11 and 12. Preparation for these meetings begins October 9. All meeting will be in the JSAC Ballroom.

Curriculum Center: :(Cindy Britt): No report.

Reference: (Fay Verburg): Rod Bustos and Fay Verburg are testing a new chat service for Reference, “Library Help”. It is available at a minimal yearly cost and provides instantaneous service to library users.

As time permits, Rick Sulzycki, Reference Assistant, is currently working on GIL-lookups for donated material.

Library Instruction: (Camilla Baker): All library instruction classes for October have been scheduled.

Special Collections: (John O'Shea): The third LYRASIS shipment has been returned to the library. The fourth shipment is being processed for shipment. It will be the last shipment for this digitization contract.

Three Special Collections instruction classes were recently scheduled and taught: for Prof. Anna Harris (English), Dr. Wendy Turner (History), and Dr. David Hollingsworth (History). Two voluntary sessions were scheduled for Dr. Kathleen Trigg’s Communications class.

This semester’s history research session is scheduled for October 26 from 5:00-9:00 p.m. An announcement has been sent to the History faculty so that they can share this information with their students.

The Archives Month presentation at ASU will be held on October 25 at 3:30 p.m.

Acquisitions/Cataloging: (Kyle McCarrell): Kate Culver, Cataloger, has processed all of the books ordered in FY12 as well as some of the donations from the Edward Cashin collection.

Kyle McCarrell and LouAnn Blocker presented to the Music and Art Departments regarding the latest library information for their departments.

Kyle McCarrell attended a webinar on the Basics of RDA and Trends in E-books.

Automation: : (Rod Bustos): Only a few people have provided feedback on the new homepage prototype, more feedback is requested to get a broader perspective.

SPSS version 19 has been installed on four computers located on the 3rd floor. The computers are the two closest to the elevators and two next to the handicap station.

Several more of the new staff computers have been installed, including all three of the circulation desk terminals and one of the computers in Government Information.

Outreach:(Mellie Kerins): There were three entries for the Family Room door decorating contest, and each one will receive a restaurant gift certificate. The design chosen for the front door is by Judy Waters, Purchasing Office, second place design which will be used on the back door, by Yadira Payne, and Laura Coleman’s design won third prize.

The artwork in the second floor Art Gallery will change at the end of the month.

Electronic Resources/Serials: (LouAnn Blocker): Trials from several vendors are ongoing. Of special interest is SpringerLink at www.springerlink.com (on-campus only for now) since the journals portion of that subscription begins in January, and some ebooks that would be hosted on that same site are being considered.

LouAnn Blocker and Camilla Reid met with Lori McGill from EBSCO on September 21 and discussed various issues, including some overlap analysis reports which might be needed for making decisions on databases to support new or expanding programs within Augusta State University. She also restated the information from Jodi Kuehl at EBSCO regarding help with ebook downloads: patrons can call or email EBSCO support on their own with issues.

LouAnn Blocker, Camilla Baker and Yadira Payne attended and made a presentation on LibGuides at the Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy September 22-24.

Government Information: (Yadira Payne): The Biennial Survey for Federal Depositories is due in October. Yadira Payne will complete it before she goes on leave.

Yadira Payne served as faculty facilitator at the Student Activities’ “Political Indiscretions” Hot Topics Hot Plates. It was a fun program where faculty and students engage in discussion on a variety of topics.

Yadira Payne served on the alumni panel for the English and Foreign Language’s Meet the Majors event. She represented the Foreign Language majors with the other panelist representing English majors. This was a great event that continues to grow yearly.

Business Services: (Ginny Loveless): No report.

Associate Director/Circulation: (Jeff Heck): Jeff Heck is currently reviewing an alternate software approach to Ariel, a tool for distributing Interlibrary Loan files.

Director: (Camilla Reid): The Board of Regents will be on campus October 11-12 for their monthly meeting.

The finalists for Dean of the Pamplin College of Arts and Sciences will be on campus for interviews the week of October 21.

In Fall 2012 there will be a mini-break from classes called Fall Paws [Pause].

The library’s draft unit plan was sent back from the VPAA’s office with some suggestions for revision in formatting, to link goals/strategies as closely as possible to the University’s and the Library’s strategic planning process, and to build in additional assessment measures. The final plan in due to Institutional Effectiveness on October 21.

Committee Reports: (Kerins): Inreach: Upcoming dates: November 17 Thanksgiving Luncheon, and December 20 Holiday Luncheon

(McCarrell): The initial Online Education Council will meet next week. Kyle McCarrell will attend a Distance Learning conference at Columbus State on September 29 and 30.

(Reid): The Library Committee met September 20. Dr. Angela Bratton, Department of History, Anthropology and Philosophy, will be the chair again this year. Major topics of discussion were the library’s website and the newly completed interior renovation master plan. The committee asked to see the new prototype website at its next meeting on November 1.

(Bustos): Circulation and Interlibrary Loan Manager search committee: The committee has invited three candidates to campus for interviews later this week. Schedules have been sent out – the committee hopes all library employees will try and attend various opportunities to meet with the candidates.

(Bustos): IT Committee: The campus IT Committee had its first meeting. It was a relatively short meeting in which Paul York was elected chair. Chip Matson made a few announcements – Student Technology Fee call for proposals went out and October will be Security Awareness Month.

(Payne): Lyceum Committee: The committee has a meeting this week. Ideas and/or suggestions for programs for the committee to consider for the upcoming season are welcomed.

Yadira Payne has been asked to participate in the Violence Against Women Committee. A LibGuide will be created to highlight their events as well as library resources on this issue. All departments in the library are asked to submit a list of resources to Yadira’s student assistant, Tristan Nall

Miscellaneous: (Reid): A pizza party will be held in honor of Rose Axton, Media Services Director, 11:30am-1:00pm September 30. A campus-wide event will be held at the time of her retirement in February 2012.

(Payne): A library statistics working group met to discuss the current process for collecting statistics within and between units, in order to update and streamline the process.

(Verburg): Fay Verburg is taking part in one of the campus reading groups sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning. The group is reading the book, Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell.
