Special Agenda Items:None.

Area Reports:
Media Service: (Ralph Herndon): All Student Technology Fee requests were submitted.

On October 14, Gordon Spivey, Classroom Services Manager, will meet with a consultant about potential upgrades to University Hall viewing room 170 and the Galloway Hall testing labs.

Curriculum Center: (Cindy Britt): The Curriculum Center has been busy helping students prepare for going into the public schools for labs next week. Cindy Britt is also working on book orders with department funds from the library.

Reference: (Fay Verburg): No report.

Library Instruction: (Camilla Baker): Two classes for October 24 need to be assigned an instructor.

Special Collections: (John O'Shea): Appointments are being scheduled in December with ASU personnel for records retention discussions.

Over 80 students visited Special Collections in September for classes and research appointments for their class assignments.

Stephanie Hill conducted a Bell Ringer interview October 10 concerning Special Collections and Georgia Archives Month.

Carol Waggoner-Angleton, Special Collections Assistant, is working on two Georgia Humanities grant applications. One is for the audio reformatting project, “From our past, in the present, for the future”. The second is a Civil War “Let’s talk about it” grant, using the framework of ALA’s Let’s Talk about it.

Acquisitions/Cataloging: (Kyle McCarrell): Kyle McCarrell attended the Distance Learning Conference at Columbus State University on September 29-30. He also attended COMO (Georgia Library Association) along with other ASU librarians. He presented in one session regarding how to handle donations.

Kyle McCarrell presented to the Educational Leadership, Counseling, and Special Education Department regarding the latest library information for their departments. It is likely that they will request more training in the future.

The first shipment of donated books was taken to 2nd and Charles. Roughly 25% of the titles were taken by the store. In-store credit was received for these titles. A second shipment will be taken in the next couple of weeks.

Automation: (Rod Bustos): Owen Angleton, Automation Assistant, is continuing to work on the new library website prototype. Rod Bustos and Owen Angleton have received some positive feedback from staff, but are still looking for more. In particular, they are seeking help from the different departments regarding the description of what their department does. Owen has made an effort to put descriptive information for each department, but would prefer staff to send appropriate wording.

Outreach: (Mellie Kerins): The date of the Meet the Author event with Edgar Johnson has changed to October 27 at 2:30. The previous date created a conflict with the interview schedules for the Dean of Arts and Sciences. The event will take place in the Reese Library 2nd floor lobby. Dr. Johnson will discuss his book What About Us? Standards-Based Education and the Dilemma of Student Subjectivity.

Paintings by Sharon Fausnight and Emily Shipe, and portraits by Christina Rice are featured in the second floor gallery space at Reese Library.

Electronic Resources/Serials: (LouAnn Blocker): The library will have a new GETSM consortial license for 2012-2014 with Wiley. The new GETSM license will allow those of us at smaller schools to have access to the entire Wiley Online Library for a very reasonable price. This access will begin in January. Many thanks to Bill Potter and to our Wiley representative, Elaine Tomaselli, for working this out and informing us all of the changes and details.

The library will have a trial of the Past Masters collection of electronic texts beginning October 17. This collection encompasses the world's largest collection of full text electronic editions in philosophy. The series also includes significant collections in political thought, religious studies, sociology, the history of science, economics, and classics. Original language texts are available in Latin, French, German, Danish and Dutch, aside from English and English translation.

Government Information: (Yadira Payne): No report.

Business Services: (Ginny Loveless): Nine double-sided, mobile whiteboards have been placed on the second floor for student use. Markers and erasers are available for check-out at Circulation.

Associate Director/Circulation: (Jeff Heck): The Circulation/ILL and Acquisition/Cataloging units currently are reviewing resumes for the Library Assistant II position, which will be split between the two units. The committee will proceed with final pool candidates next week. Circ/ILL also has approval for and is posting the LA IV position that was held by Veronica Corradino.

Director: (Camilla Reid): All of the Library’s and Media Services’ FY12 Student Technology Fee proposals have been submitted. The committee is meeting on October 13 to begin its review of the campus-wide proposals.

Ginny Loveless, Jeff Heck, and Camilla Reid met with Rose Axton and other Media Services and Curriculum Center staff on September 28 and 29 to get an overview of the media services administrative, classroom services, media center, and special events programs before Rose left campus.

Augusta State was well-represented at GACOMO this year. Yadira Payne and her co-authors were awarded the EBSCO Award for a submitted paper on their salary survey of government documents librarians in the Southeast. Yadira was also chosen as the Georgia Library Association’s 2011 McJenkin-Rheay Award winner. Both Kyle McCarrell and LouAnn Blocker made presentations. Carol Waggoner-Angleton was awarded the Hubbard Scholarship.

The October 11-12 meeting of the Board of Regents here at Augusta State went very well. Many units on campus cooperated to make this a successful event. Many thanks to the staff of Media Services for all their support and for all the preparation in the weeks prior to the BOR’s visit.

Camilla Reid stated that she was very impressed by the involvement of library employees in various K-12 initiatives and thanked everyone for their input. She will be reporting this information to Lurelia Hardy of the university’s Service to K-12 Committee.

Camilla Reid and LouAnn Blocker have been discussing the possibility of the library sponsoring workshops as part of the Center for Teaching and Learning’s programming.

The four finalists for the Dean of the Pamplin College of Arts and Sciences will be on campus the week of October 17. Camilla Reid encouraged everyone to try to attend the open forum interview sessions.

The final unit plans are due to the Office of Institutional Effectiveness by October 21. Camilla Reid asked everyone to have their input in by Friday, especially anything pertaining to assessment strategies.

Committee Reports: (Verburg): Library Statistics Working Group: The group met October 11. A spreadsheet is being developed to track all library statistics.

(Bustos): Circulation and Interlibrary Loan Manager Search Committee: The committee interviewed three finalists for the position. Veronica Corradino was selected and will begin as the new Manager November 1.

(Heck): Faculty Policies Committee: Five items have been forwarded for review by the University Council in preparation for the next ASU Faculty Meeting.

(McCarrell): Online Education Council: The committee met on October 5. Ray Whiting, Associate Vice President for Institutional Research and Effectiveness, provided a charge for the council and the leadership and plans for subcommittees were organized.

Miscellaneous: (O’Shea ): Nominated by Reese Library’s Special Collections Assistant Carol Waggoner-Angleton, October 4, the Augusta-Richmond County Historical Society was recognized by GHRAB at the State Archives for excellence in documenting Georgia’s history.

Carol Waggoner-Angleton was recognized at the Georgia Library Association’s Awards Dinner at COMO October 6 as the 2011 recipient of the C. S. Hubbard scholarship for her work for her M.L.I. S. at Valdosta State University.

(Blocker): Technical Services and Circulation/ILL will hold the Kids University fundraiser October 27 from 12:00p.m. – 2:00p.m. There will be lunch, at least one raffle, and maybe something ‘spooky’ for the staff to enjoy.

(Heck): The most recent issue of the Georgia Library Quarterly has been published. Beginning with the next issue, the journal will not use a formal layout but will be entirely posted, edited, and published on the Digital Commons platform.

Jeff Heck has begun a term as president of the Kiwanis Club of Uptown Augusta. One bright note for the club is the addition of a new Key Club at the Academy of Richmond County, initiated by Lansing Lee III, past Kiwanis president, and Charlie Tudor, dean of the international baccalaureate program at ARC.

(Kerins): The library will hold a baby shower for Kyle and Lynn McCarrell November 8 at 2:30 p.m. The Inreach committee is collecting donations for a gift.

Next Meeting: November 9, 2011 10:00 a.m. Media Services’ Conference Room
