Special Agenda Items: None.
Area Reports:
Media Service: (Ralph Herndon): Business as usual.
Curriculum Center: (Cindy Britt): College of Education students are coming in to do a scavenger hunt for class. This is to familiarize the students with available resources within the Curriculum Center.
An evening graduate class will be coming in next week for a tour so that they will be aware of the materials available to them.
Cindy and Camilla Reid will meet with Judi Wilson in Teacher Education January 27 to discuss the upcoming NCATE campus visit.
Reference: (Fay Verburg): Fay discussed reference scheduling concerns.
Plans are underway for rearrangement of seating areas in reference.
Fay has been working on the following: revisions to the Library Access Policy, the Library Disaster Preparedness Plan, and parts of the new library web page.
Library Instruction: (Camilla Baker): Bibliographic instruction for February has been scheduled. Camilla asked that committee members look at the March schedule and sign up for classes by February 15.
Special Collections: (John O’Shea): John asked everyone to remind staff, students, faculty and others who could benefit about the recruiting visits from Georgia Perimeter College for the Library and Information Certificate Program and the Associate Degree Program. The sessions will be held January 29 at 2:00 p.m. at the Columbia County Library, and January 30 at 10:00 a.m. at the Augusta Main Library as well as at 2:30 p.m. at Reese Library.
The bulk of the processing of the Veterans History Project has been completed. However, there is still some concern over missing files.
New material has been added to the CSRA Library Association archives which are housed in Special Collections (manuscripts).
There is a new display outside of Special Collections highlighting Dr. Lee Ann Caldwell’s newly published textbook on Georgia history.
Acquisitions/Cataloging: (Kyle McCarrell): No report.
Automation: (Rod Bustos): Student Assistant Jessica Huey started working in Automation at the beginning of spring semester. She is a good addition to the office and is currently working on a digitization project.
Rod was contacted by an MLIS student at USC who is interested in doing an internship. Although she is primarily interested in the systems area, she is also very interested in gaining any sort of academic library experience. Several departments in the library have expressed an interest in working with her as well. If the internship works out, it will take place in the summer.
Outreach: (Various): Camilla Baker reported that the welcome packets put together by Outreach Assistant Matthew Whittington were well received by the part-time faculty.
Camilla Reid reported that there will be new art from members of the Columbia County Artists Guild going up in the 2nd floor gallery in February.
Matthew Whittington is providing information for “Library Corner” in the weekly ASU Report. Anyone with information to consider for publication, please let him know.
Matthew, with help from Fay Verburg and others, updated the Faculty Flyer for the Center for Teaching and Learning’s orientation for part-time faculty members on January 21.
There will be a meeting of the group planning for the African Americans in the History of Baseball grant events on February 7 in the Reese Room. The display will be in the library and there will be several events offered in January/February 2013.
Electronic Resources/Serials: (LouAnn Blocker): H.W. Wilson databases will cut over to EBSCOhost on February 1. They should redirect to EBSCOhost, and on February 1, LouAnn will be able to put the new URLs in the GALILEO menu. There is no word yet on the combined EBSCO/Wilson “superdatabases” that will combine content from similar subject areas. Contact LouAnn if there are problems.
Rod Bustos and LouAnn attended GALILEO GLRI (GALILEO Local Resource Integration) training on the new interface. There are several pluses: library staff can now manage the subject and type categories, and GALILEO has made it easier to include images next to database listings. There was a question about how much control the library has over the ordering of items in the GALILEO menu. Only the local databases that LouAnn enters can be controlled at ASU. GALILEO-provided databases are managed at GALILEO headquarters. GALILEO encourages libraries to send suggestions for changes.
Gale Virtual Reference Library, with the ten titles selected from that collection, is now listed in GALILEO under both databases A to Z and the appropriate subject areas.
Supervised fieldwork student Melissa Johnson is making contributions to the library and learning a lot about academic libraries. She has already finished a project looking at the differences in Project Muse standard and premium collections, and is currently working on our JSTOR list of bound serials to identify individual journal issues JSTOR is seeking for scanning. She will begin checking individual ejournal subscriptions for access and adding images to our GALILEO menu items soon.
Government Information: (Yadira Payne): A good portion of the boxed-up microfiche that Government Information had removed from the fiche cabinets last year have been relocated to Technical Services for safe-keeping as Government Information personnel work on removing the items from the catalog.
Current displays: Black History Month, Heart Health, and George Washington.
Due to the 211 items that were identified and de-selected from the depository profile in 2011, the library’s current selection profile stands at 59.23%.
Federal Depository Library Program is currently seeking input to their new marketing slogan campaign. As the representative of our depository, Yadira has submitted her preference.
Business Services: (Ginny Loveless): Ginny reminded the committee that staff evaluations are due February 3. If the employee’s job description needs to be updated following the evaluation, the revised job description is due February 17.
Associate Director/Circulation: (Jeff Heck): Katie Glaeser and Tina McClarnon have begun working on several small projects to place QR codes around the library, including one providing a FAQ for printing to be placed next to public printers, and one pointing to resources of interest relating to art currently on display in our gallery.
Circulation is receiving more requests for copyright information, including some referrals from ITS. The library has always worked with copyright restrictions in dealing with interlibrary loan. Two circulation team members, Veronica Corradino and Katie Glaeser, will take a four-week course soon to gain more knowledge.
Director: (Camilla Reid): John O’Shea, Special Collections Librarian, will be retiring April 1, 2012.
As part of the library’s Jaguar History Project, the library is working with Dr. Wally Evans, Dr. Lee Ann Caldwell, and Dr. Jim Garvey on an oral history/documentary film project relating to the history of Augusta State University.

Last week’s Ft. Gordon Liaison Military second Meet ‘n Greet went well. The hope is to increase its participation each term.
(Loveless): Through the President’s Office, Ginny will be participating in a reading and discussion group about the future of higher education. The group will meet every Monday at 3:00p.m. through the beginning of March.
(Blocker): The Black History Month committee has a full slate of activities planned for February. Be sure to look at the flyers that will be coming out and check the ASU calendar for events of interest to you. There is something for everyone.
