Area Reports:
Media Service: (Ralph Herndon): No report.
Curriculum Center: (Cindy Britt): No report.
Reference: (Fay Verburg): Since the last Library Faculty Meeting, Fay took part in the following events: CSRA Library Association Trolley Tour; attended the D2L Basic Overview Session; and met with one student for a research consultation.
Library Instruction: (Camilla Baker): All instruction classes for the 2012 spring semester have been completed. There were a total of 75 classes and 1,687 students taught. Comparing spring 2011 and spring 2012, there was a three percent increase in the number of classes and a thirteen percent increase in the number of students.
Special Collections: (Carol Waggoner-Angleton): Reminders have been sent out for the deposit of minutes for all committees listed as part of committees, workgroups, and taskforces on the University website. This is an attempt to capture all minutes this year as part of the reinterpretation of the Board of Regents Records Retention Schedule. It’s noteworthy to point out that merely having minutes for all the campus committees placed in the University Archive is not an ideal representation of committee work performed by these committees, but it is a good starting place for this robust project.
A public relations meeting was held regarding the publicity for “Augusta’s Viewpoint: Understanding the Civil War” and “Saving the Voices of Augusta’s Past”. The meeting was attended by Danielle Harris (ASU Public Relations), Autumn Johnson, Matthew Whittington, and LouAnn Blocker (co-director for Augusta’s Viewpoint). Preparations for the publicity and staging of the events are underway. Carol met with Michelle Neely, ASU Bookstore Manager, to provide her information on “Augusta’s Viewpoint: Understanding the Civil War” in an effort to provide copies of the texts available for purchase at the Bookstore. The Augusta public library, Paine College Library, and Columbia County Library have received their reserve copies of the “Augusta’s Viewpoint: Understanding the Civil War” texts.
The Dr. Bill E. Bompart Map Collection finding aid has been completed.
Carol attended the South Carolina Archivist Association (SAA) workshop “Basics of Managing Electronic Records: Getting You Started”. Watching this in conjunction with the guest lecturer presentation by Seth Shaw, Duke University Archives, was quite useful. A low level strategy Reese Library can undertake would be archiving all Facebook pages associated with the university, beginning with our own. Facebook has an archival tool available for use.
Acquisitions/Cataloging: (Kyle McCarrell): The department has completed ordering of all materials and will transition into focusing on weeding, particularly in the nursing area.
Automation: (Rod Bustos): Automation installed a duplex unit on the workgroup printer in Technical Services to allow for double-sided printing.
Outreach:(Johnson): Multiple articles were submitted to the Library Corner and Campus Notables sections of the ASU Weekly publication. A forthcoming article features a notice about Greenblatt Library’s new “Binding Wounds, Pushing Boundaries: African Americans in Civil War Medicine” exhibit. Outreach is working with Renee Sharrock, Greenblatt’s Curator of Historical Collections and Archives, to cross-promote events in our respective libraries.
The extended hours for Finals Frenzy! have been posted throughout Reese Library and the JSAC. The hours are also posted to Reese Library’s Facebook page. The extended hours received a positive response from students.
Autumn and Matthew Whittington, Outreach Assistant, attended the “Carterette Series Webinar: WordPress for Library Websites” sponsored by the Georgia Public Library Service. While the webinar focused less on the application of Wordpress as a blog, the webinar raised awareness on thematic issues and security concerns that might affect the success of a Reese Library blog. During the upcoming summer semester, Outreach will pursue a blog in place of the “What’s New” page utilizing the WordPress platform.
ASU Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day: The theme for Reese Library’s Progressive Snacking is “Stache Bash” and will include photographs of history’s famous mustaches along with mustache-shaped cookies. There has been a positive response from Reese Library staff as well as the organizers for Progressive Snacking regarding Reese Library’s theme and visual materials.
Electronic Resources/Serials: (LouAnn Blocker): Applications are now being accepted for the Library Assistant III position previously held by Marsha Reese. The application deadline is May 7, and, after that, Technical Services staff will review applications and conduct interviews.

Government Information: (Yadira Payne): Yadira has resigned her position as Reese Library’s Government Information Librarian and accepted a position with Ft. Gordon’s Woodworth library. Her last day in this position will be May 15. She is grateful for the opportunity to have served the Augusta State University community.
Business Services: : (Ginny Loveless): The library has been reimbursed for the Family Room computer that was damaged during the roofing renovation. A new computer will be purchased soon.
Associate Director/Circulation: (Jeff Heck): Circulation desk scheduling for Finals Frenzy! hours is complete.
The Circulation work areas will be redesigned to accommodate the transfer of some materials from Media Services to Reese and to allow direct line of sight for staff in the workroom area.
The ACRL Statistics for 2012 (covering July 2010 - June 2011) will be completed prior to the May 15 submission deadline. More extensive documentation concerning numbers of employees will be kept with the final report for this year.
Director: (Camilla Reid): With the Academic Vice President's Council, Camilla R. has attended interview sessions of the candidates for Dean of the College of Education during the week of April 23. (Reid) Documents relating to the work of the Consolidation Library Work Team (CLWT) have been placed in the “Consolidation” folder under “All Employees” on the shared bindery. Library peer work groups will be meeting over the next few weeks to develop and report by May 11 recommendations for library structure and workflow for New U.
(McCarrell): Kyle met with Gail Anderson, GHSU’s Serial Librarian, and Sandra Bandy, GHSU’s Electronic Collections Librarian, regarding the e-book collections at GHSU and ASU.
All members of Reese Library’s Technical Services department met to discuss the future goals and missions of a consolidated library and, in particular, what types of projects/workflows we hope to have implemented in the upcoming five years. This discussion was done prior to LouAnn and Kyle meeting with our GHSU counterparts (who have had the same discussion) regarding how a consolidated Technical Services may look in the New U.
Committee Reports: (Blocker): GLA Awards Committee: Awards nominations are due May 14. There is a new award this year, the GLA Team Award. All the information needed for nominations can be found at http://gla.georgialibraries.org/comm_awards.htm
(Reid) Library Committee: The Library Committee met April 19. The primary agenda item was the annual report and recommendations to the Vice-President for Academic Affairs.
(Loveless): Staff Advisory Committee: The Committee is selling cookbooks to raise money to host events on campus. The cookbooks contain recipes submitted by current and retired ASU employees. They are available for purchase for $10.00 If interested, let Ginny know. The library has purchased two copies, one for the general collection and one for the University Archives.
(McCarrell): Online Education Council: At the last meeting, the Council learned how GHSU will be transitioning and implementing Desire2Learn and the advantages once ASU links in with GHSU’s version of D2L. An initial draft of an online education policy manual was submitted for review.
