Policy for Use of Scanner in Reference Room 111

Audience:Public, including non-ASU community members.

Materials scanned: This service is designed to provide scanning access to Reese Library materials, which cannot otherwise be checked out of the building. Prior to scanning, materials must be cleared for copyright considerations by the Special Collections librarian.

Options for Saving Scans: Scans may be saved to the hard drive, then burned to CD-R or CD-RW discs supplied by the patron; there is also a 250MB Zip drive on the computer; and, patrons may scan to their network folder if they have one. Standard floppies (1.44 MB) may suffice for scans produced to JPG or GIF files, but they will rarely be large enough to hold a TIF image.

Turnaround time: Normally, within 24 hours of the request for up to 5 scans. Requestor will fill out a brief form to provide name, phone number, and information about the material to be scanned.

OCR: We will provide Optical Character Recognition (converting scanned graphic into an editable text file) at the discretion of the librarian or staff person handling the request. OCR can be highly time intensive and may detract from the provision of service elsewhere.

Quality: We will produce the best scan possible without providing cleanup (we will not "despeckle," adjust for moiré pattern, etc.). This will be the responsibility of the requestor. Scanning of oversize materials, such as maps, may require the patron to find graphic software that will allow; "stitching together" the set of scans.

Size: Items may be scanned at 75 dpi through 2400 dpi, and images may be saved in TIF format or in derivative compressed formats, such as JPG or GIF. Saving as TIF images, high resolution, and larger numbers of scans produce a longer turnaround time. Plan on about 15 minutes per scan with higher resolutions.

Printing:   All prints generated by the library staff will be made on standard 8.5" x 11" 20 lb paper unless the patron supplies other paper.
