About the Association/Contact Information
Optimism is Contagious
The past year brought several significant optimistic milestones. Reese Library at ASU is about to join buildings with the new Student Center to follow the national trend toward greater integration of student services. We wish them well.
The new ECGRL public library in Burke County opened fall 2005 near the Waynesboro campus of Augusta Technical College to better serve their populations. The library building is a part of the Waynesboro Park Complex with recreational facilities. Another ECGRL branch also opened in the fall. Diamond Lakes is part of the Richmond County Recreation Complex off Windsor Springs Road. This long-awaited facility serves the Hephzibah and South Augusta area.
The new ECGRL Columbia County Library opened March 27th in the new Evans Government Complex. The grand opening is scheduled for April 21–29. To share in the celebration, the Association’s spring meeting provides a guided tour at the Circulation Desk on Saturday, April 29th at 1:00 p.m. For directions, see mapquest.com (Address: 720 North Belair Road, Evans GA).
All of these public library projects reflect the recent trend to centralize community services. Not to overlook the new Headquarters Library for downtown Augusta, the passing of the SPLOST last November provided a welcome relief after a long struggle to fund a new public facility. After selection of an architect, the process of balancing “form and function” in the floor plans is underway. The actual construction is slated to begin fall 2006.
The optimism continues as public library advocates focus efforts on increasing the per capita funding in Georgia. This major step can help offset the rising cost of print materials, but the state would still be low in national rankings. Nationwide, libraries are experiencing cuts in hours and services if not the closing of branches. The public protests when branches are closed, but input earlier in the budgeting process is vital to a proactive approach. I urge all who recognize the value of libraries to join their local county’s Friends of the Library organization as it can serve as an advocate at local and state levels. For membership information, please contact your local Public Library. The Columbia, Burke, and Richmond County phone numbers are under the “Libraries” drop-down menu at the ECGRL Homepage. Express your optimism!
One final reminder: the CSRA Library Association dues support the Elizabeth M. Tyson Memorial Grant at USC – Columbia. The annual contribution of $300.00 is remitted each fall. Please send in your new or renewal membership application to Fay Verburg at ASU. Completing the application will assist in updating the membership roster.
Optimistically yours,
Debby Barron, President
Our April 29th meeting will be a guided tour of the new Columbia County Library in the new Evans Government Complex area; 720 North Belair Road, Evans GA. The 29th is part of the grand opening celebration extending from April 21–29th. We will meet in the Circulation Desk area at 1:00 p.m. for a tour to be followed by a brief meeting.
After the meeting you may wish to attend other events "on your own." At 2:00 p.m. there will be a reception for and book signing and author talk by Louise Shivers, author of Here to Get My Baby Out of Jail and Whistling Woman. Ms. Shivers lives in Columbia County and is the writer-in-residence at Augusta State University. At 4:00 p.m. local author and retired English teacher Naomi WIlliams (Two Rivers) will speak and sign copies of her book.

Picturing Augusta: Historical Postcards from the Collection of the East Central Georgia Regional Library
During the very early 1900s—at the height of America's Golden Age of postcard popularity—teacher Ella C. Mayo collected picture postcards depicting popular scenes in Augusta GA. Her collection provides an intriguing snapshot of early twentieth-century Augusta, and the pictorial coverage of the city's many different facets offers insights into its remarkable history. Now, users can explore this remarkable story online through GALILEO's Digital Library of Georgia in Picturing Augusta: Historic Postcards from the Collection of the East Central Georgia Regional Library.
Georgia HomePLACE (Providing Library and Archives Collections Electronically) encouraged this collaborative digitization project, supported with Federal LSTA funds administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Georgia Public Library Service, a unit of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.
Picturing Augusta depicts the commercial development, economic prosperity, and social customs of Augusta and its inhabitants during the opening years of the twentieth century. Collected by Augusta school teacher Ella C. Mayo (later Belz) at the turn of the twentieth century through 1914, the postcards include images of notable Augusta landmarks such as the Augusta Canal, Augusta Country Club, Bon Air Hotel, Lake Olmstead, Meadow Garden, Medical College of Georgia, and the Partridge Inn. Several relate specifically to Augusta's position as the second largest inland cotton market in the United States—they show cotton fields, harvested bales, cotton mills, and other scenes of production associated with the cotton industry in Augusta. Many of the scenic postcards depict views along the Savannah River as well as commercial and residential streetscapes along both Broad and Greene Streets.
The new Picturing Augusta web site allows visitors to browse the collection of online postcards by collection order, publisher, subject, or title. The web site also provides extensive orientation and contextual materials to help visitors better understand the significance and meaning of those historic artifacts. The “Introduction to Historic Picture Postcards of Augusta” essay provides overall orientation to the topics, buildings, and landscapes depicted on the postcards. Additional sections provide related links, suggested readings, and related archival materials.

The Center for the Study of Southern Art, the library of the Morris Museum of Art, is continuing to grow, recently acquiring a new server for the library's automation system and new workstations and printers, thanks to the generosity of Dr. and Mrs. Peter Klacsmann and an anonymous donor. With nearly 13,000 volumes of books and sound and video recordings, and more than 15,000 vertical files, the library will soon be purchasing more shelves and filing cabinets.
The library had its third successful book sale this past November, relying mostly on donations, since the collection of books and journals is of permanent research value and rarely weeded. As part of an informal exchange program, the library regularly sends its exhibition catalogues and brochures to approximately 400 art and museum libraries around the country and receives many valuable items in return.
Part-time curator of research Karen Klacsmann adds artist information to our vertical files from her research and contributes biographies of our artists to AskArt.com and the Georgia Encyclopedia Online.
Library assistant Matt Glubrecht, in addition to regular duties, is working on an inventory of the papers of Xenia Zed, an artist and influential early editor of Art Papers magazine. Volunteer Drusilla Carter, a recent graduate of the library school at the University of South Carolina, is working on an inventory of the papers of Larry Connatser, an artist who lived and worked in Savannah and Atlanta. Librarian and archivist Cary Wilkins is also working on the Connatser papers and acquiring materials for upcoming exhibitions of work by Maybelle Stamper, the Murphy family of Savannah, Hubert Shuptrine, Lyle Bongé, and Zelda Fitzgerald.
The Morris Museum of Art has completed an agreement to acquire nearly 1,000 works of art from noted Washington, D.C., collector Julia J. (Judy) Norrell. The significant acquisition includes paintings, photographs, prints, drawings, sculpture, and folk art and encompasses the portion of Ms. Norrell's collection related to the South. Among the highlights of the collection are photographs by Eudora Welty, Henri-Cartier Bresson, Walker Evans, and Ben Shahn, and paintings by William Tolliver and Eldridge Bagley. Major works by African American artists John Biggers, Beverly Buchanan, Jonathan Green, Juan Logan, Whitfield Lovell, and others are included. Visionary and self-taught artists include Howard Finster, Clementine Hunter, Mose Tolliver, and Minnie Adkins, to cite just a few. Several well-known artists, such as William Christenberry, are represented by many works in a number of different media.

Tom Sutherland has been busy with the planning committee for the 225th Anniversary of the Battle of Augusta. The Augusta Richmond Historical Society plans a commemoration for the 225th anniversary of the Battle of Augusta on Friday and Saturday, June 2 and 3, 2006. Three major events—a seminar, dinner, and a battle re-enactment, are planned to commemorate the siege of Fort Cornwallis, which took place May 22 through June 5, 1781, during the American Revolution.
On Friday afternoon, June 2, from 1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m., a symposium entitled "Fighting for Augusta," relating the events of the American Revolution in Augusta and environs, will be held at the Augusta Museum of History. That evening at 7:00 p.m., a colonial dinner will be held at Saint Paul's Parish Hall. Interpreters in colonial dress will be participating in the meal. Tickets for this event are $50 and may be purchased from Lynn Thompson, 803-279-7560 or lynn@colonialtimes.us.
On Saturday, June 3, at 2:00 p.m., the Georgia Sons of the American Revolution will hold a wreath laying ceremony behind Saint Paul's, the actual site of the siege. At 3:00 p.m. the 434th US Army Band will present a Continental Concert. Then at 4:00 p.m., a battle reenactment will take place on the city's pension property, behind the old railroad depot on Reynolds Street and directly across from the Augusta Museum of History and immediately adjacent to historic Saint Paul's Episcopal church. Geographically, this is almost on the actual site of Fort Cornwallis.
