President's Message

We are offering a variety of meeting topics, days, and times for the 2006-07 school year. The outline of the programs is published in this newsletter with additional details available closer to the meeting dates. We followed the suggestions offered last spring at the meeting at the new Columbia County Library. Specifically, a luncheon and an evening meeting are included. I am particularly excited about featuring our prolific local author, Frank Yerby, at the April meeting. All too often, we tend to focus upon national talent to the exclusion of local writers and artists. We are always looking for more meeting topics or venues and encourage member suggestions.

The Executive Committee is very pleased and grateful to the library community for exceeding the membership goal of 50 members. For the membership year starting in January 2007, our challenge goal is 60 members!

Have a healthy and satisfying school year.
Debby Barron

October Meeting

The first meeting of the CSRA Library Association for 2006-2007 will be a tour of the new Cancer Research Center on the MCG campus, Friday, October 27, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. The tour will last about 40 minutes. A hot/cold lunch from Fat Man's can be ordered through Peter Shipman (706) 721-9903 with your RSVP. An email with the menu attached was sent previously to members. Soft drinks and tea will be provided. Also, lunch is available on your own from the MCG Student Center Grill (run by Fat Man's) or the MCG Cafeteria.

RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED to ensure enough parking places and for access to the Cancer Research Center. Because parking is scarce on campus, please make every attempt to carpool. Deadline for reservations is Wednesday, October 25. RSVP to Peter so that he may have a roster of people attending, to reserve a parking space, and to order lunch. More parking information will be provided to those requesting parking spaces.

Please come visit Augusta State University to see how ASU has combined the social heart of the campus (the new Jaguar Student Activities Center) with the academic heart of the campus (Reese Library). During the construction of the new student center, visitors used a converted emergency exit. The Library reopened its front doors at the beginning of fall semester. The new front doors open into the beautiful new enclosed breezeway between the library and the student center. The library has also gotten a major interior facelift with new furniture, carpet and paint. For a parking map, go to: www.aug.edu/public_information_and_publications/asumap/index.html. On weekdays, please stop by Public Safety for a visitors' pass. Access to the library is through the east and west doors of the breezeway between the two buildings.

Camilla Reid, Camilla Baker, and Jeff Heck, Reese Library, presented "What Every Faculty Member Should Know About Information and Computer Literacies," at the annual meeting of the Georgia Council of Media Organizations (GACOMO) in Athens, GA, on September 21.

Joseph Schneider and Deborah Tritt, Reese Library government documents faculty and staff members, presented their findings from a 2004-2005 survey of social science students at ASU in their presentation, "Usage of Government Documents by Social Science Students at Augusta State University," at the GACOMO annual meeting.

Tom Sutherland presented "Steven Vincent Benét, Augusta Poet" at the September Brown Bag Program at the Augusta Museum of History.

Tom co-chaired the celebration of the 225th anniversary of the Battle of Augusta for the Augusta Richmond County Historical Society. Three major events, a seminar, a dinner, and a battle re-enactment, were held to commemorate the siege of Fort Cornwallis.

A highlight of the celebration was the presence of the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, part of the U.S. Army’s 3d Infantry Regiment that supplies the guards for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington. The uniforms worn by the Corps are dated circa 1781, and consist of black tricorn hats, white wigs, waistcoats, colonial coveralls, and red regimental coats.

On Saturday, June 3, 2006 the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) held a wreath laying ceremony behind Saint Paul’s Church, the actual site of the siege, and received a proclamation from the city of Augusta. The Old Guard Fife & Drum Corps performed followed by a battle reenactment on the field immediately adjacent. Geographically, this was almost on the actual site of Fort Cornwallis. A Maham Tower and Fort Cornwallis were built for the re-enactment. In 1781, “Light Horse” Harry Lee had a tower built and mounted a cannon on it so he could fire over the walls and into the Fort.

This event drew re-enactors from Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Kentucky, Florida, and Pennsylvania. Following the re-enactment, members of the audience were invited to visit the participating re-enactors for their interpretation of colonial and revolutionary life and to see the various items of clothing, equipment and weapons used. We estimate between 5,000 and 6,000 people saw various events of the 225th Anniversary of the Battle of Augusta.

Alice Walker, retired August 31 after 23 years with the Augusta Public Library. Mrs. Walker is looking forward to having more time to travel with her husband, Doug.
