SPRING
IS HERE!
|
Our February meeting was more than great - it was outstanding. I think I can comfortably speak for most of the attendees. My MCG colleagues will certainly echo my opinion. For those of you who missed the fun, we celebrated Black History Month with a tour of the Lucy Craft Laney Museum, had a delicious catered lunch from Food by Calvin, and enjoyed a dynamic speaker, Dr. Jimmy Carter, a local historian. Kudos to David White at ASU for coordinating this meeting. He did a fantastic job.
At the February meeting, we had several membership renewals and gained some new members, too. If you have not renewed your membership, please do so. Remember part of the membership dues support the Elizabeth Tyson scholarship fund. The dues cycle now follows the calendar year of January-December.
As a group, we acknowledged the retirement of Dr. Charles (Chuck) Curran, Professor at CLIS-USC, with a congratulatory card. Many of us are alumni of USC and experienced Dr. Curran's guidance in the classroom. For those of you who have not had the pleasure of his acquaintance, he is a strong advocate for libraries and the library profession.
Hope to see you at the March meeting. Plans are in the works for our business meeting in either late April or early May. Debbie Barron offered to organize our night at the Greenjackets, another opportunity for fun!!!

Staff Highlights
Reese Library, Augusta State University
Highlights of the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) 10th National Conference: Crossing the Divide, Denver, CO, March 2001
by Roxann Bustos, Associate Director, Reese LibraryHot topics at the conference included:
· Information Literacy (IL) - A variety of panels, contributed papers, and poster sessions focused on the efforts libraries across the country are making to implement ACRL's Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education; these include IL courses, collaborations with classroom faculty, web-based tutorials, and assessment tools.
· Digital Reference - Presentations on the future of academic reference showed how libraries are diving into the 24/7 digital environment and what chat-style reference services can offer that Internet services cannot replicate.
· Value Library adds to Academic Institutions - The physical library building can make very important contributions to students' academic experience; this is something virtual or fly-by-night institutions cannot offer. Personal interaction of librarians with students, especially at risk students, can be critical to student success.
· Serials Prices - Some of the ways libraries are dealing with the perennial spiraling serials cost issue include: using librarian/teaching faculty teams to work on cancellation projects, participating in SPARC (The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition), and using a document delivery service (UnCover) as a substitute for journal subscriptions cancelled due to high costs. The latter presentation got my prize for the best title: What--Do You Get a Brain with That? - inspired by the comment of a student assistant when he learned that the journal Brain Research costs over $15,000/year.
