Happy New Year!!! I hope this year brings only good things for all. We had a great meeting in December at the USC-Aiken library. Thanks to Ms. Jane Tuten and our USCA members for being such gracious hosts to twenty or so participants. Thanks also to Amy Duernberger for making all the arrangements at the Ruth Patrick Center.
Several decisions were made at the December meeting regarding our membership dues and the annual membership cycle. In the past, the membership year was from June to May. Fay Verburg, membership coordinator, suggested the membership follow the calendar year. The officers thought it an excellent idea and so did the members, passing this request by unanimous vote. Thus, the membership year is now January to December.
The second item that was brought up for a vote and raised some discussion was membership dues. Our dues have been $5.00 for years, with $3.00 going to the Elizabeth Tyson Scholarship fund. The officers proposed raising the dues to $7.00 with $3.00 continuing to support the Tyson Scholarship. The remaining dollars will go into our general account to be used for operating expenses (mailings, printing newsletters) and for other scholarship opportunities.
For further information on membership dues contact Fay Verburg, (706) 667-4906. And speaking of membership, I urge you to renew your membership. If there are new faces in your library, invite them to the next meeting and encourage them to join. Hope to see many of you at the February meeting.

Ebooks at the Savannah River Site
In September of 2000, the Savannah River Site (SRS) Library in Aiken purchased a collection of electronic books, or ebooks, from netLibrary, a firm that specializes in delivering prepackaged collections of ebooks to public, academic and special libraries. The ebooks are accessible through the netLibrary web site, which allows customers to search the full text of the ebook, view pages, and reserve them for a period of time. The ebooks are digitized versions of printed books, complete with illustrations, cover shots, and page numbers. Authentication is provided by IP recognition, but once a customer creates a username and password, he can visit the netLibrary site from any web-enabled computer in any location, either at work or away.
Because the Library had funds at the end of the fiscal year, we began to seriously investigate purchasing a group of ebooks. netLibrary had recently put together two collections on mechanical engineering and electrical/optical engineering, and provided us with title lists for each collection. We evaluated these ebook titles against our own holdings and determined that the mechanical engineering ebooks would be the best fit. There are about 30 books in the collection, all published by Marcel Dekker. With the license signed, netLibrary placed the SRS logo on our customized home page on their web site.
Library staff proclaimed the arrival of the ebooks on the library's website and provided links to the netLibrary site and the title list. All the ebooks were cataloged, and hypertext links were added to the catalog records so that customers could go straight to the full-text ebook. We publicized this new resource using screen shots from the netLibrary site in presentations and demonstrations to engineering staff around SRS. Announcements about the ebooks were also included in the SRS daily news email message, which is distributed across the Site to everyone with an e-mail account.
We had hoped that the ebooks would be used at least as much as a printed book, and so far we are pleased with the results. (Usage statistics are easily obtainable from netLibrary.) Our plans are to add to our ebook holdings in the near future.
ECGRL-Main library Reopening February 19
Construction and reshelving continue at the downtown facility with a projected reopening of mid-February. The critical issue is building security. If the construction workers on the second floor need the outside doors open, security will be a serious concern. Also, some computer furnishings are further delayed in delivery. We trust that the completed remodeling will enhance use of the library resources and the public will forgive us for the inconvenience.

Reese Library, Augusta State University
Fay Verburg and Diane Black received a matching grant to microfilm nine Reese Library manuscript collections. This grant awarded from the Georgia Historical Records Advisory Board (GHRAB) was intended to promote preservation of and access to historical documents in Georgia's repositories and local government offices.
The impetus for the grant was the realization that many key military collections of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries were deteriorating and facing permanent loss. Reese Library wanted to insure that these valuable collections would not be lost, but preserved for use by scholars and researchers of local and/or military history.
Eight of the collections chosen for microfilm preservation were originally cataloged in 1997 as part of the Georgia Archives and Manuscripts AutoMated Access (GAMMA) Project . One of the most important benefits of the project has been the ability to provide links between collections held in different repositories in Georgia as well as those in other repositories outside the state.
The ninth collection microfilmed is the history of the Augusta Arsenal as compiled by Ruby M. McCrary Pfadenhauer. Mrs. Pfadenhauer worked at the Arsenal from 1925 to 1955 and served as Public Information Officer, Historian and Special Writer. The collection consists of correspondence, reports, newspaper clippings, publications, and photographs. The collection was donated to Reese Library by Mr. Herman Pfadenhauer in 1998.
The following titles have been microfilmed. (Detailed finding aids are available at Reese Library. Finding aids were created by Bill Wells, project assistant.)
Archie Butt Camp No. 5 records, 1898-1928.
United Spanish War Veterans.
Augusta Arsenal records, 1861.
Berton E. Daniel World War I diary, 1917-1919. Camp 435 records, 1878-1917.
Confederate Survivors Association.
Clinch Rifles minutes, 1851-1861.
George S. Storrs papers, 1862-1864.
Letters to Lucy W. Walton, 1917-1919.
Marcellus A. Stovall papers, 1860-1879.
Ruby M. McCrary Pfadenhauer papers, 1816-1997Currently Diane and Fay are working on a project to digitize the finding aids and make them available on the Reese Library web site.

I'M ON A COMMITTEE!
Oh give me some pity,I'm on a committee,
Which means that from morning to night,
We attend, and amend, and contend, and defend
Without a conclusion in sight. We confer and concur, we defer and demur,
And reiterate all of our thoughts.
We revise the agenda with frequent addenda,
And consider a load of reports. We compose and propose, we suppose and oppose,
And the points of procedure are fun!
But though various notions are brought up as motions,
There's terribly little gets done.We resolve and absolve, but we never dissolve,
Since it's out of the question for us.
What a shattering pity to end our committee,
Where else could we make such a fuss. --Author Unknown
