As I write the last of my President's Columns for the newsletter, I want to thank each of you for supporting your association this year. We've welcomed new friends into the group and had a variety of programs. At the March meeting Tamera Lee, Director of Libraries at MCG, discussed the implementation of Georgia's new integrated library system and demonstrated search options to an appreciative audience Thank you, Tamera.
Serving as CSRA Library Association President has been both enjoyable and rewarding. I've had the privilege of working with a dedicated and reliable group of officers. Thank you Bob, Debbie and David. Not only is the association a collegial platform linking librarians and para-professionals from public, academic, school and special libraries, it's a forum for promoting our profession. A portion of membership dues is set aside for the Elizabeth Tyson Scholarship Fund at Davis College at USC and this year we made a $500 contribution.
The nominating committee, Mary Ann Cashin, Chair, has submitted a slate of officers for next year to be balloted upon at the May 1 meeting. Should you wish to nominate someone from the floor, please obtain prior confirmation that your nominee is willing to serve. Thank you, Mary Ann.

A final piece of business this year will be to approve the Association's Mission statement. A working draft currently reads as follows:
The CSRA Library Association provides an organization for librarians
and para-professionals of
the five county region to exchange professional information and
to become acquainted with other area librarians and library workers of
public, academic, school and special libraries. The Association meetings
provide opportunities to tour the various libraries in the CSRA and learn
about their collections. The Association emphasizes lifelong learning skills,
and information literacy, supports communication and collegiality, and
supports an annual scholarship in library and information science.
Should you wish to suggest changes to the proposed Mission statement please contact me by April 26.
The May meeting will be held May 1 at 11AM at the Augusta-Richmond County Museum and will include a guided tour of the display "Augusta's Story." Following the tour, Smoaks will cater a luncheon in the Museum's Boardroom. A quarterly meeting will be held after the luncheon.

The day at the Boathouse will include team building, stress reduction exercises, and presentation of a strategic plan for GA libraries by state library personnel. No word yet on the lunch menu. AUGUSTA STATE UNIVERSITY
Louise Shivers, Writer-in-Residence at Augusta State, appeared as her hometown's special guest at Wilson NC's Sesquicentennial Celebration. She was honored for her novels about Wilson and eastern NC history and for bringing the film community to Wilson to film part of Summer's Heat from her first novel.
Shivers met with a representative from Screengems Studios, Ltd. from Wilmington, NC concerning her screenplay of A Whistling Woman. An excerpt from My Shining Hour entitled "Carolina Beach" is scheduled to appear in an upcoming issue of "Sunday Reader " in the Raleigh, NC The News And Observer.
Currently Ms. Shivers is spending several months in Arizona. She is conducting workshops, attending writers conferences and doing research for a new work. She is especially interested in the stories of the Yaqui Native Americans and Hispanics that settled the Guadalupe community at the base of South Mountain between Phoenix and Tempe.
Lillian Wan, Circulation staff, presented a montage for Capt.
Winston Scott to the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History and Conference
Center. Capt. Scott, the second ever African-American astronaut to walk
in space, donated the montage from his latest mission of STS-87, flown
from November 19 to December 5, 1997. Due to his schedule, Capt. Scott
was unable to attend the celebration during Black History Month. In lieu
of his presence, he requested
that Lillian make the official presentation to the museum.
David White, Coordinator of Library Instruction, is a recipient
of the Association of Colleges & Research Libraries 1999 National Conference

stipend to help defray conference expenses.
