Spring Meeting News

The Spring/Membership Meeting will be held on Saturday April 29 at 11:00 AM at Aiken Brewing Company 140 LAURENS ST SW | AIKEN, SC 29801-3848 | Phone number: 803-502-0707

Meet at 11AM for a brief lecture by brew- master Randy Doucett. Lunch, ordered from the menu (mostly sandwiches, vegetarian orders on request), at 12:00 noon. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Fred Roper, Dean, USC School of Library and Information Science. Business meeting will follow lunch.

Directions: From downtown Augusta, take Aiken/Augusta highway (Route 1,78) to Aiken. Once in Aiken, this road will be called Richland Avenue. Proceed on Richland Avenue until it intersects with Laurens Street, which is the center of downtown Aiken. Look for Aiken Drug, Plum Pudding, Security Federal Bank as landmarks. At the intersection turn right on to Laurens Street. Laurens Street is a four lane street, separated by a parkway. There is parking on both sides of the street. Aiken Brewing Company is on the left side of the street. You could either park on the right side and cross the street or continue to the next traffic light and turn left up Laurens and park in front or near the Brewing Company. Additional parking is on Richland Avenue or Newberry Street one block away.

From Augusta via Interstate 20. Go 20 East towards Columbia. Get off exit 22 (not sure of exit number) It is Route 1 or York Street. Proceed down Route 1 towards Aiken. Once in Aiken, the road will be called York Street. At the intersection of York Street and Richland Avenue turn right. A good landmark(s) for that corner is the Salvation Army thrift store and the First Baptist Church. Continue on Richland Avenue until it intersects with Laurens Street, turn left onto Laurens.

REESE LIBRARY
AUGUSTA STATE UNIVERSITY

Melissa Harter has been appointed to the position of Reference/Interlibrary Loan Librarian. Melissa has a Masters of Library and Information Science from The Catholic University of America. She most recently was employed as a law librarian at Miles and Stockbridge P.C. in Baltimore, MD. In her spare time Melissa enjoys reading, biking, and taking care of her toddler son Devon.

Mellie Kerins, acting government Documents Librarian, has been appointed to the position permanently. Mellie holds a Masters in Library and Information Science from the University of South Carolina and is active in the Friends of the Augusta Library as well as several other community organizations.

Martha Corkrin, Library Assistant II in Technical Services, joined the Reese Library staff in October. Martha previously was employed on campus in the Admissions department. In her current position Martha works with copy cataloging and preparation of new books, CD-ROMs etc.

Also joining the library in a new capacity is Bill Wells. Bill formerly worked as a reference assistant. In his new position as Library Assistant III, Bill provides automation support. Also new to Reese Library is Carmen Meniez, part time clerical in Technical Services.

WESTINGHOUSE SAVANNAH RIVER SITE TECHNICAL LIBRARY

Darra Combs was awarded the 2000 Special Libraries Association Development Stipend. The award for $750 will be presented by the SLA Science & Technology Awards committee which held an essay contest for members who had never attended the SLA Annual Meeting. The essay topic was the theme of the 2000 Annual Conference : "From Independence to Interdependence: the Next Phase of the Information Revolution." The award and award check will be presented at the 2000 SLA Annual Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania June 10-15, 2000.
