Westinghouse Savannah River Site Technical Library
The next meeting of the CSRA Library Association will be January 27th
at the National Science Center' s Fort Discovery on Riverwalk. Our tour
begins at 11:00 am. At noon we will adjourn to Gorin' s Cafe for lunch.
They offer a variety of soups, salads, and sandwiches and have a room saved
for us. Those who want to re-enter Fort Discovery should have their hand
stamped on the way in. Parking in the garage under Fort Discovery is $.75
an hour or free in the public lot at 6th
and Reynolds, beside Saint Paul' s and across the street from the Museum.
Admission to Fort Discovery is $8.00 or $6.00 for seniors (55+). If we
have at least 15 in the group we will get a 10% discount, but we have to
go in together, and payment must be made by one person. Let' s assemble
at the entrance before 11:00 and pay Treasurer David White, and he can
write a check for admission.
I request everyone' s help with membership. Please check the members list, elsewhere in this issue, and if any of your co-workers are not current members, encourage them to join. We are a stronger and more versatile organization when we have more members. We generate more money for the scholarship fund, and we stand a better chance of a group discount on the admission price at places like Fort Discovery.
I am happy to report that the amount of money in the Elizabeth M. Tyson Memorial Scholarship Fund is now over $10,000 thanks to some Foundation gifts. As soon as the Fund reaches $15,000, it will be self sustaining and available to award grants for CSRA residents enrolled in the College of Library and Information Science at the University of South Carolina. If anyone wants to make a charitable contribution, send a check payable to the College of Library and Information Science and mark it for Elizabeth M. Tyson Memorial Scholarship #1A1272. Mail it to Chrissy Booth, College of Library and Information Science, Davis College, USC, Columbia, SC 29208.
Debby Barron tells me she is too busy with house remodeling to coordinate
a Lynx game this season but she will advise anyone else who would be willing
to organize it. Any takers? Meanwhile keep watching "This Old House" for
Debby.

Remodeling of the Richmond County libraries is expected to begin this month. The first two branches scheduled for renovation are Maxwell and Appleby. For now, work will be done on the exteriors of these buildings. This should not interfere with patron attendance. Future work on the interiors of these and other branches will necessitate some closings that will be announced at a later date. All branches will remain open during January. The ECGRL would like to welcome Tjuana Gaines to our team. She will takes on the position of Administrative Assistance for Public Relations in our system. REESE LIBRARY
AUGUSTA STATE UNIVERSITY
Lillian Wan, Library Assistant III in circulation, came across
the one-day filming of the Pamplin television documentary, A Separate
Path to Glory on September 25, 1999. The Tyee Group was filming the
movie based on a book by Robert Pamplin Jr. The Pamplins are
the generous family who have contributed financially to Augusta State University
over the years. Due to the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pamplin
Sr., Reese Library was funded and completed in 1977 and named for the parents
of Mrs. Katherine Reese Pamplin, a 1936 graduate of the then Junior
College of Augusta. Scenes were shot with the three main stars around the
Lake Forest Dr. area where the Pamplins had lived. Corbin Bernsen (star
of TV series LA Law and numerous television and theater movies)
will star as Mr. Robert Pamplin Sr.; Ms. Brynn Baron, a previous short-time
resident of Augusta, will play the role of Mrs. Katherine Reese Pamplin;
and Chad Bartulis will portray Robert Pamplin Jr. The film mainly covers
time in Oregon and Virginia around the 1950 - 1961 time period. An article
and pictures by Lillian were published in the September 30, 1999 issue
of Augusta Focus. The text of the article is also posted on
the Pamplin family website.
Check the website for updates with photos and the finalized date for the
premiere of the movie.

WESTINGHOUSE SAVANNAH RIVER SITE TECHNICAL LIBRARY
Savannah River Site employees now have networked access to seven bibliographic
and reference databases from their desktops. Six databases use the SilverPlatter
interface (Energy Technology Data Exchange, Applied Science and Technology,
EI Index, Gale Associations, Business Periodicals Index, and Georef);
the last, CorpTech, has its own software for searching data on technology
companies. The SRS Library & Services department worked with computing
personnel to load the databases on a new server last fall. Once an employee
obtains a Windows NT password, they are able to use these databases at
their \par computer. The databases are also available throughout the two
Library branches on site. The Library has also made an electronic version
of the popular reference book, Perry's Chemical Engineers' Handbook,
available through the same server. Employees can search, view and print
sections from the textbook, and use "active tables" which allow zooming
and plotting along an axis. Plans have also been made to add an electronic
version of another heavily used reference, the CRC Handbook of
Chemistry and Physics.
If your name is not on the membership list, please send the application
form along with a check payable to:
