President's Message:

Our next meeting is March 21 at  7:30 PM at Augusta State University Reese Library.  The speaker will be Dennis Sodomka, Executive Editor of the Augusta Chronicle. His  topic will be the First Amendment.  Freedom of speech is a cornerstone of journalism and newspapers as it is to librarians and libraries.  This is an opportunity to hear knowledgeable comments on this critical issue and to discuss topics such as obscene literature, censorship, Internet filters, and harmful material.
                                                                                                                                                 --Tom Sutherland

Join the CSRA Baseball Buddies!:

It's time to plan for a Greenjackets activity.  In the spirit of cost-saving and convenience, we will sit in the "all-you-can-eat" picnic section near the concession stand. Waitpersons will serve from a menu of hamburgers, hot dogs, BBQ, side items, and beverages.  Alcohol requires additional cost.

The tickets and food are per person (child or adult) at $11.00.  The cost is not reduced for large groups. The target dates are between mid-June and the end of July.  The dates for give-aways are not yet confirmed.  Hopefully by the March 21st meeting, date options will be available.

Of People and Places:

ABBE REGIONAL LIBRARY SYSTEM

Public libraries in South Carolina  received  $4.3 million in grants from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.  The Foundation teams with public libraries to bridge the digital divide. The grant provided $2.1 million in cash, $1.2 million in software and $1 million in training and technical support statewide.

The ABBE Regional Library System received $331,978 from the grant. This provided the four county area with 50 new PC's, 9 content servers and 13 laser printers. Trainers from the Gates Foundation conducted two-day, on-site sessions for library staff at the 13 area libraries. Two system employees received training in Seattle.  Installation of equipment and training was completed on October 5, 1999.

The Aiken County Library and the Nancy Carson Library (North Augusta) will share a $10,000 grant from the Gregg Graniteville Foundation, Inc. This grant will be used to upgrade the print reference collections in these two libraries.

Recently Carol Ann Bunch was named Library Manager for the Bamberg County Library and  Jeannie Simmons was promoted to the ABBE Regional Children's Librarian.

WESTINGHOUSE SAVANNAH RIVER SITE TECHNICAL LIBRARY

On January 31 the Savannah River Site Library Services department announced desktop access to approximately 500 electronic journals, published by Elsevier Science. These journals are available to our customers through the SRS intranet. This system allows users to search and access full text articles from 1995 to present. Approximately 70 additional journals from other publishers are also offered through EBSCO Online on the same internal Web site. Included are journals covering energy, technology, government, business, the sciences, and medicine. Full-text access to these journals is the result of a cooperative effort between Department of Energy site libraries, the Los Alamos National Laboratory Library, the U.S. Office of Scientific and Technical Information, and Elsevier Science. Due to conditions in our license, this service is only available within the physical boundaries of the site. Remote users cannot access these jour- nals. Over 1,100 journals are available, but in the future, this number will be revised to represent the Elsevier journals subscribed to collectively by all DOE libraries.

Savannah River Site employees now have networked access to seven bibliographic and reference databases from their desktops. Six databases use the SilverPlatter interface (Energy Technology Data Exchange, Applied Science and Technology, EI Index, Gale Associations, Business Periodicals Index, and Georef); the last, CorpTech, has its own software for searching data on technology companies. The SRS Library & Services department worked with computing personnel to load the databases on a new server last fall. Once an employee obtains a Windows NT password, they are able to use these databases at their computer. The databases are also available throughout the two Library branches on site. The Library has also made an electronic version of the popular reference book, Perry's Chemical Engineers' Handbook, available through the same server. Employees can search, view and print sections from the textbook, and use "active tables" which allow zooming and plotting along an axis. Plans have also been made to add an electronic version of another heavily used reference, the  CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics.
