Advising Frequently Asked Questions

Does my AP Math test score give me credit for any Math course(s)?

A score of 3 or better (out of 5) on the AP Calculus AB exam earns credit for Math 2011. A score of 3 or better (out of 5) on the AP Calculus BC exam earns credit for Math 2011 and Math 2012. In either case the student also gets credit for Math 1113 if they earn a grade of C or better in next calculus course after AP credit.

Can I be placed into a higher level course without having an AP test score?

Without the AP tests, placement is based on high school performance. Satisfying the following requirements places a student into Math 1120, 1220, or 2011, depending on their major.

  • SAT mathematics score of 600 or greater
  • a high school GPA of 3.0 or greater
  • two years of high school algebra
  • a year of high school trigonometry
If the course placed into is the student's first mathematics course in college, then completing that course with a grade of C or better also earns the student credit for Math 1113.

What science courses do I need for Computer Science or Mathematics?

You must choose the Core Option II requirements for Science Majors. Choose one of the following sequences of two laboratory courses from the following:

  • BIOL 1107/BIOL 1108 Principles of Biology I and II
  • CHEM 1211/CHEM 1212 Principles of Chemistry I and II
  • PHYS 1111/PHYS 1112 Introductory Physics I and II
  • PHYS 2211/PHYS 2212 Principles of Physics I and II

What courses do I need for a Math Minor?

See the Mathematics Minor Course Requirements.

Does a Math class count for both a Computer Science major and a Math minor?

A course can count for both if it's required for at least one. Hence, MATH 2011, MATH 2012, MATH 3030, required for the CSCI degree, can count for both. But MATH 4280 and 4350, electives in the CSCI degree, can't be counted for both. In addition, MATH 3110, 3241, 3242, 4260, and 4430 don't count in a Math Minor.

Can I take a test instead of taking a course?

Credit for some courses can be achieved by examination. The student

  • must be currently enrolled and in good academic standing
  • must present evidence that he or she is qualified (work experience, non-credit courses, course work taken at non-accredited institutions, or military courses) to take the examination
  • must meet all prequisites for the course
  • has not attempted to gain credit in the course by examination within the last 12 months
  • has not attempted nor earned credit in the course
There is a $5 per credit hour fee for credit by departmental examination. Credit by examination is limited to 10 semester hours in a discipline and 30 semester hours in the university.
