Basic Web Design With Netscape Composer
 

I. Adding Text

1.  Netscape Composer works like a wordprocessor so all you have to do to add text is start typing.

 

II. Editing Text

1.  To change color of the text:
  • Select the text
  • Select Format from the menu
  • Select Color... 
  • Pick a color
2. To change font size:
  • Select the text
  • Select Format from the menu
  • Select Size
  • Choose 8, 10, 12, 14, 18, 24, or 36
3. To change text style (i.e. Bold, Italic, etc.):
  • Select the text
  • Select Format from the menu
  • Select Style
  • Choose Bold, Italic, etc.
4. To add a bulleted list:
  • Select Format from the menu
  • Select List
  • Choose the type of list you want


**NOTE: Do not try to change the font type. What may look nice on your computer will look bland on another because not all computers have the same font selection. 

 

III. Alignment

1. To align text or objects on your web page select the text or object, then choose your alignment. The alignment options are located under Format, Align on the main menu and as an the last Icon on the bottom toolbar. 


**Note: Do not try to align text or objects by adding tabs or spaces. Tabs and spaces are not recognized by web browsers. 

 

IV. Save/Save As

1. To save file you are currently editing select File.
2. Select Save or Save As.
3. Select either the Floppy drive or Removable Disk as Save In location.

4. Type in the name of your file to the right of File Name, then click Save.

 

 V. Background

1. Select Format from the main menu.
2. Select Page Colors and Properties.
3. To change background color click the color bar to the left of Background, select a color, then click OK.
4. To have an image as your background type in the file name of the image to be used in the space provided to the right of Use Image:.


**NOTE: If you use the Choose File option be sure to delete everything to the left of the file name for example you would delete the following italicized text file:///C:/My Documents/filename.jpg

 

VI. Adding Images

1. Place your cursor at the location you want your image to appear. 
2. Select the Image Icon on the toolbar.
3. Under Image Location type in the image file name:
yourfile.jpg
yourfile.gif


**NOTE: If you use the Choose File option be sure to delete everything to the left of the file name for example you would delete the following italicized text file:///C|/My Documents/filename.jpg

 

4. If you are using your image as a link and don't want the blue border around your image do the following:
4a. Select the image.
4b. Select the Image Icon on the toolbar.

4c. In the bottom right corner of the window change Solid Border: to 0.

 

VII. Adding Links

1. Place cursor where you want your new link to appear.
2. Select the Link Icon from the toolbar.
3. In the space provided under Enter text to display for new link type in the text you want to appear as your link.
4.  In the space provided under Link to a page location or local file: type in the url or file name you wish to link to, then click OK.

If you want an image or existing text to be your new link do the following:
1. Select the text or image you want to be your new link. 
2. Select the Link Icon from the toolbar.
3. In the space provided under Link to a page location or local file: type in the url or file name you wish to link to, then click OK.

VIII. Adding Tables

1. Place your cursor at the location your new table should appear.
2. Select the Table Icon from the toolbar.
3. Enter the number of rows & columns you want your table to have.
4. Select table alignment, border width, table width, and color, then click OK.

5. Click within a cell to add images, text, or other tables.

 

IX. Editing Tables

1. To insert a row place your cursor in the row above where you want the new row to appear.
1a. Select Insert from the menu.
1b. Select Table.
1c. Select Row.
2. To insert a column place your cursor in the column to the left of where you want the new column to be.
2a. Select Insert from the menu.
2b. Select Table.
2c. Select Column.
3. To delete a table, row, column, or cell select the area to be deleted.
3a. Select Edit from the Menu.
3b. Select Delete Table.
3c. Select table, row, column, or cell.


 

Transfering Files To Your Website Using WS_FTP
 

X. FTP

1. To upload files to the web server start WS FTP program then change settings as follows:
Host name: www.aug.edu
HostType: Automatic Detect
User ID: (your student number, stu....)
Password: (your password)
Remote Hoste: www
Local PC: a:\

**NOTE: For Local PC: enter the drive letter for the floppy drive (a:\) or for the zip drive (s:\)

2. Click okay.
3. The left side of the window displayes Local System (the files on your disk)
4. The right side displays Remote System (the web server).

5. Select files to be added to your website on the left side, then click the arrow pointing to the right.

 

Some Useful Tips:

1. Don't Panic
2. Plan the layout of your web site before you start creating files
3. Be sure to request your web account by visiting Computer Services in Hardy Hall.
4. Your main page has to be titled Welcome.html
5. When transfering files using WS_FTP select the Auto box to the right of file type. The program will then switch between ASCII and Binary formats automatically.
6. Save your images and html files on the same disk in the same location so you don't have problems with broken images.
7. If you use the Choose File option be sure to delete everything to the left of the file name for example you would delete the following italicized text file:///C:/My Documents/filename.htm
