Media Services Annual Report
This past year the Media Center has continued to develop into a place that is accessible and dedicated to the services of our customers, the university community. This service takes many forms, including delivering audio visual equipment to classrooms, assisting students and faculty in the preparation of presentations, and video production of guest lecturers. All services performed by the Media Center directly tie in with the University's overall educational mission. The main goal of the year was to continue to provide improved services to the classrooms. The goal was met. Many new changes in the way Media Services does business helped meet this goal. In an effort to automate customer services, the Media Center has started using a cash register to expedite faster service. This makes customer time at the counter shorter and less problems when preparing deposits. Most of the 8,039 requests that the Media Center serviced last year involved equipment. To meet those needs the Center is constantly replacing and adding to its inventory. During the previous year, replacement equipment included 20 overhead projectors and carts, 2 laser pointers, 2 LCD panels, 2 laser disc players with bar code readers, 5 video cassette recorder/monitors, 4 portable screens, 2 digital video projectors, 4 camcorders, and 4 35mm cameras. Due to the increased demand for additional classroom amplifications systems, the Media Center purchased additional wireless microphones. With the new implementation of a prevenative maintenance plan, this should keep equipment working properly and less down time for repairs. With the support form the Georgia Technology Fund, we were able to implement some of the latest technology equipment for the classroom which includes: The Electronic Instruction Workstation for Butler Hall, Teaching Technologies Equipment Bank, and the Portable Video Computer Based Presentation System. With the initiative on internatinalizing the curriculum, a Universal Multi System Video Cassette Recorder was purchased for the purpose of reformatting video materials in an effort to bring international topics and issues to our students and faculty. Renovation of the media Services included carpeting in the Media Center, and two viewing rooms, new office for Rose Axton and Joe Bauer, construction of a second distance learning classroom and construction of a satellite to be installed outside Hardy Hall. The satellite will enable more availability for satellite teleconferences and programming. Again this year, the Cullum Series and Sandhills Writers Conference was a big success. The lecturers were video taped and the material was cataloged in our holdings. We were able to offer technologically advanced equipment to the guest lecturers for better presentations. Our Goals are (1). Implement a computerized check out systemfor equipment and materials. This capability will give the Media Center the ability to beter serve the campus community. (2). Review Media Center's policies with the goal of improving service to the campus community.
