Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to finish the program?

  • Students who work full-time usually take six hours of course work a semester and finish in 2 ½ to 3 years. Students who come to school full-time (nine hours of course work a semester) finish in two years.

    • Are classes scheduled conveniently to fit working students' needs?

  • All MPA classes are scheduled at nights and/or on weekends.

    • What do I have to do to be admitted?

    Submit the following documents to the ASU Admissions Office:

    • transcripts from all undergraduate institutions
    • GRE or GMAT score (less than 5 years old)
    • 2 letters of recommendation
    • current resume
    • completed application
    • completed immunization form

    Can I get the GRE waived?

  • The only students who can get a waiver from the GRE (or GMAT) requirement are those who already hold a graduate degree from another accredited institution. If your undergraduate GPA was 3.0 or higher, you can take one class for one semester while awaiting receipt of a GRE score. No other exceptions are granted.

    • Do I have to have a particular undergraduate degree to apply?

  • No, we accept students from a wide variety of undergraduate institutions and degrees.

    • Do I have to be admitted to the program to take classes?

  • Yes. We do grant two exceptions to this rule. Transient students (those who are working on their graduate degree at another institution) may take courses with us to transfer into their primary institution. The other exception is those students who already hold a graduate degree.

    • What score do I need to make on the GRE to get admitted?

  • GRE Verbal Reasoning score at the 48 percentile or higher
  • GRE Quantitative Reasoning score at the 49 percentile or higher
  • GRE Analytical Writing score at the 48 percentile or higher

    • Is there a comprehensive exam required to finish the program?

  • No, there is no comprehensive exam.

    • Is there a thesis required to finish the program?

  • No, instead students do an original piece of applied or theoretical research, referred to as the capstone project.
