Would you like to perform? Teach music to public or private school students? Conduct? Go to graduate school for advance musical studies? Whatever your goal, you'll find a music program at Augusta State University that provides excellent preparation.

 

Admission

Students must meet the requirements for regular admission to Augusta State University. Information and applications may be obtained from the Office of Admissions, which is located in the Benet House on the Walton Way compus or online at www.aug.edu/admissions.

 

Bachelor of Music in Performance

The Bachelor of Music in Performance program prepares students for careers as intrumentalists in symphonic, jazz, and popular styles; as singers in opers, theatre, and popular music; as solo recitalists; accompanists; private and college instructors and church musicians. Students may choose to study any of the following: woodwinds, brass, strings, percussion, guitar, keyboard, and/or voice.

Bachelor of Music in Music Education

The Bachelor of Music in Music Education prepares students for careers as K-12 music teachers in public and private schools.

Bachelor of Arts in Music

The liberal arts emphasis of the Bachelor of Arts degree provides music students greater exposure to courses in other academic areas. Students concentrate their coursework in areas that suppot their career goals.

Minor in Music

Musicians who wish to major in another academic area and who would like to pursue an interest and ability in music may elect to obtain a minor in music.

Performing

Performing excellence is a fundamental part of all prgrams within the music department and opporunities exist in all university ensembles. ASU offers a symphony orchestra, wind ensemble, jazz combo, choir, chamber singers, opera ensemble, and various smaller chamber groups.

 

Faculty

ASU music faculty continue to be active in their particular fields, whether it be performance, composing, or scholarly research, but remain, first and foremost, dedicatd teachers and clinicians.

You'll find accomplished and nationally recognized performers among the music faculty at Augusta State. Drs. Robert Foster and Martin David Jones released CDs, titled How's That? and The Piano Music of Andre Previn, respectively. In addition to an active performance schedule as a pianist, Dr. Jones received two commissions for compositions and had his work, Emergence, premiered by the Augusta Concert Band as part of the Westobou Festival.

Dr. Rosalyn Floyd, and Augusta Arts Council's Artist of the Year, presented a series of concerts and master classes in Hong Kong with Dr. Linda Banister. Dr. Christine Crookall was a presenter at the American String Teachers' Association conference, and Dr. Angela Morgan serves as the chair of Region 7 for the National Association of Schools of Music. While maintaining full schedules at ASU, Drs. Morgan, Crookall, and Jones perform as Trio Augusta and as members of Symphony Orchestra Augusta.

Dr. Robert Foster attended and performed a recent World Shakuhachi Festical in Sydney, Australia. Dr. Bill Hobbins conducts ASU's choir in the annual Tri-College Martin Luther King, Jr., Day Observance, commencements, and the annual Holiday Tree Lightings.

Dr. Clayton Shotwell wrote the music supplement for HUMN 2001 and HUMN 2002. Ms. Patti Myers, director of the ASU Opera Ensemble, recently presented three sold-out performances of the musical, Oklahoma!

 

Performance Opportunities

An annual opera, fine arts gala, evening concerts, and other university events such as commencement present opportunities for all students to perform both on and of campus.

 

Concerto Competition

ASU's Orchestra conducts a concerto competition, and the winners are presented cash awards in addition to the honor of being featured performers in the final concert of the year.
