Georgia Association of Nursing Students (GANS)
AUGUSTA STATE UNIVERSITY CHAPTER

What is GANS?

The Georgia Association of Nursing Students (GANS) is a completely student-run organization focused on contributing to the development of nursing education and the profession of nursing, as well as encouraging the professional development of each individual member. Through their involvement in GANS nursing students learn how to become better leaders, patient advocates, and team players. At the same time, activities that students undertake through involvement in GANS contribute to the betterment of nursing education, the development of the profession of nursing, and ultimately to the promotion of better health and health care for all people.

GANS is a state constituent of the National Student Nurses' Association (NSNA) and is made up of School chapter constituents throughout Georgia. An Executive Board meets monthly to oversee GANS. Typically, these meetings are open to all members and participation is welcome. A general meeting of the GANS House of Delegates occurs each fall during our annual convention. At this meeting, delegates from each of our constituent School Chapters vote on resolutions submitted by GANS members and elect officers for the upcoming year. During the convention, GANS awards numerous scholarships, along with individual and chapter awards.

GANS sponsors a retreat for student leaders each year. The retreat enables GANS to bring together student leaders from school chapters across the state to discuss coals and plans for their organizations. The goal of this retreat is to facilitate communication among students from various schools to invigorate their chapters, share ideas, and learn more about student leadership. At the retreat GANS members will come together to develop a statewide community service project, a statewide Breakthrough to Nursing project, and to learn how to be better chapter leaders.

Throughout the year, GANS and its constituent chapters are active in coordinating a wide range of projects. Examples include community health, political involvement, and recruiting a diverse range of outstanding students into the nursing profession. A quarterly GANS publication, the EKG, serves as a forum for members to write articles addressing issues relevant to nursing students throughout Georgia.
