Backstage Volunteer

Thank you for your interest in volunteering backstage at the Grover C. Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre. Unlike some of the other volunteer opportunities, our many of our backstage openings require commitment beyond just a single performance or day.

There are three types of backstage volunteers. They are:

Sound and Lights
Volunteers that are interested in sound and lights must attend a training/orientation meeting offered once each semester. We will use this meeting to get to know each other. We will offer you a tour of the facility, and a rundown of the equipment that we use. We will also ask you about your past experience with technical theatre. For those will little or no pervious experience we will give a brief explanation of how our light and sound boards operate. More complete training will be given during actual event preparation and performance.

Stage Hand
Volunteer stage hands must also attend the training/orientation meeting. However they do not need to stay for the sound and light board session. Volunteer stage hands may be used for anything from sweeping the stage, to helping to work on sets. They will often be asked to help with loading in or out big productions. Since many of these productions require the University to provide a specific number of stage hands, it is very important that volunteers actually help with the events they volunteer for.

Hospitality/Host
People interested in this position will have the opportunity to work directly with the performers. They will assist the ASU Catering Department or for some events they will actually organize the catering. They may work as a runner for the performing group helping them with their needs while they are at the theatre.

All of these positions will be working in close quarters with performers at the theatre. From time to time these performers may be children. In order to make sure that we are maintaining a safe work environment we require that people who are still interested in helping backstage after completing the training/orientation meeting fill out a short application and allow the Augusta State University to conduct a criminal background check. Current ASU faculty, staff, or student employees are not required to complete a background check.
